I recently got an XboX from my big sis' friend because he couldn't get it to work and it's out of warranty, and he recently got an XboX 360 (lucky bastard).
Anyway, after some messing around I found out that the PSU is fubar. I've been looking around and couldn't find a PSU under $30 (outside of eBay). Is the procedure too difficult for a person who's only built PCs and did the duct tape mod on the Saturn? I thought that it might be worth the experience.
The main is: Should I bite the $30 bullet and replace the PSU, or should I just buy a new XboX (probably a pre-modded one).
XboX - repair or buy new?

It could probably be a blown fuse... if not, you can use any old small PSU from a computer with an adapter (they cost like 10 bucks, all it does act as the remote switch to turn on the mobo when the power button is touched... technically you can do this with out the product, but the parts cost the same as this board costs)... you'll just have to rewire the connector (as long as you have a 1.2 or later version it uses the same old 20 pin ATX connector).
that connector I speak of can be found most any XBOX mod dealer... like sickmods or something.
at xbox-scene, just click on tutorials on the top. Click on the link for XBOX 1 tutorials. then go to the hardware mod's category (little plus sign) and find PSU mod's and repairs.

In my experience, I'd say maybe it's better to get a new one. I had the PSU on my old xbox blow too, and I got the mentioned replacement PSU from Ebay. It worked for a while, but then that PSU freaking melted and the xbox was useless. Thankfully, a re-signing of the harddrive allowed me to use it on the new xbox I got.
Unfortunately, my Xbox is a V1.0. I'm thinking about getting a new PSU when I get some spare cash (maybe after I sell my SNES games on eBay.) because I don't think I'm 1337 enough to mod the XB to use an ATX PSU and I can't seem to find a tut for replacing a fuse on my kind of PSU (everyone I saw was totally different).lordofduct wrote:head over too www.xbox-scene.com

Also, this may be a dumb question, but how the hell do I take that metal frame off the inside of the Xbox. I tried, but everytime I try, I almost bend it. I need to remove it because I want to paint my Xbox similar to the 360's colour scheme.
