mineral spirits prior to painting gamecube?

Post by optmusprimenumber »

i guess it's part of the job typically, but if mineral spirits are stronger than nail polish remover, then i don't want it anywhere near the plastic that is my gamecube shell. any of you modders/painters know whether i should use that stuff or not? i picked up a can of krylon fusion, the can says to use mineral spirits on "weathered objects" so i dunno. mineral spirits on gamecube: good idea or bad idea?

I would never use mineral spirits on plastic. Too much risk.

A console that's been inside would hardly be weathered. I'd only consider a basket case console that's been living in a garage for 10+ years to be 'weathered'. If you lightly sand and clean the shell with mild soap or alcohol to make sure any oil is removed I imagine it would be fine.

I used Krylon Fusion on a Cube before, but all I did is make sure it was clean as hell. I don't know what mineral spirits is/are. As Hobie said, clean it and possibly sand it VERY lightly, Krylon Fusion will do you good.

An old toothbrush with a little dish soap is great for getting the grit out of the nooks and crannies when cleaning it up. Make sure to give us pictures of how it turns out. :)

If you decide to sand it, make sure you clean it thoroughly afterward. You want to remove all the fine particles created from sanding it before you paint it, obviously, or else the paint wont bond as good.
