Megaman and Bass on GBA is rather tough - I think it is a port of a SNES game. I don't think though that it is the toughest Megaman game, by far the NES ones I played seemed harder to me.
Megaman Zero series (also on GBA) is rather good (and tough) as well.
just to clarify, I know all about the "standard" Mega Man GB/GBC/GBA games. I have most of them actually. I was really just curious about Battle Network since I had avoided it since it was an RPG or whatever.

Battle Network one was the first game I got with my GBA and I loved it to bits. Battleing viruses for thier chips, hunting down the Navi boss battles in order to use thier abilities. The 2nd one just took everything from the first game and made it better. Although these games have little to do with any "proper" Megaman game, they're still great games on thier own and worth checking out.

Unfortunantly, once they took the pokemon route of having two versions of the same game, I didn't bother buying anymore.

I also bought Network Transmission for Gamecube, but it just seemed to bit a weird hybrid of classic megaman with battle network megaman and I can't say I enjoyed it quite as much as I had hoped.

I actually have Network Transmission for GCN. It's pretty weird as far as it being a 2D sidescroller, but then MM looks weird and you dn't do the whole beat-boos-take-weapon thing. But I don't thikn it's terrible either.

one of my friends really likes the Battle Network games, and lent one to me, and frankly, i cant see what he liked about them. The problem isnt the story (which is crap, but i dont care), or the battle system (which is OK, but nothing special), but rather the gameplay in between. Fetch quests in large areas with no map and high encoutner rates is pretty much the entire game, and frankly, i didnt find tracking down 9 people in an enormous area for an hour or 3 to be very fun at all. It would be OK if it was a one off, but basically the whole game works liek that. (PS, i think i played Battle Network 3)

I had no idea the Battle Network series was held in such low regard; I always loved the games! 4 and 5 are my favorites of the bunch, with 1 and 2 being okay, but not great. Just don't go into it expecting Final Fantasy, because that's not what you'll get. What you will get is a fun, lighthearted action RPG with a unique and clever battle system that mixes elements of a strategy and action RPG. Of course the story isn't special, but have you ever gone into a Mega Man game expecting one? Combat takes place on 2 3x3 grids, and different attacks will strike a certain pattern and number of tiles in front of you. That's where the SRPG comes in. However, you can freely move around your grid to avoid attacks and use your mega buster as a standard, unlimited attack. The special attacks come in the form of battle chips, which you can select a few of every turn [I mean "turn" in the loosest sense of the word; really it's just a meter that fills to maximum over a set period of time, designating when you can select new chips]. The combat is extremely fast-paced, with some battles ending in under 5 seconds, while the longer ones [boss battles] may take 1-3 minutes. It's something I've never seen before, and it's very refreshing.

Basically, the reason people don't like this game is because it's not a platformer; Mega Man's main genre. All I have to say to that is just to quit your whining. You've got mountains of other platformers, and Mega Man platformers, for that matter, that you could be playing. MMBN is a great RPG series. If you're looking for a quick, addictive, fun RPG to play on the GBA, I couldn't recommend it more. Specifically, I suggest trying out 1, 4, and 5.

I played 3, white version. I found it pretty good, however I found it somewhat difficult in some places. I mean, it's beatable without the use of a guide, but it is a very fun game.

I never was one to buy two versions of the same game, and as far as I know, the only differences between the two versions (3 has White and Blue, 4 has Red Sun and Blue Moon) I believe were just other battlechips and bosses, nothing really substantial, kind of similar to the Pokemon series.

Besides those parts, LisaLover pretty much summed it all up. However, the spiritual successor to the Battle Network games is the StarForce games on the DS, and even then it's nearly the same besides a 3rd Person Perspective in the battles and the enemies are in 3D as well. There isn't any "jacking in", and there's no "Lan" or "ACDC town" which is the most stupid name for a video game town ever, in my opinion.

The Battle Network games also got an Anime adaption, in MegaMan NT Warrior. Has all of the same characters in it, but it's been so long since it's been on I can barely remember it.

in the Battle Network games, is Mega Man's name Mega Man, or is he some other spin-off character?

Mega Man is called "Megaman.exe" if you want to be technical. Kept inside some machine called a "P.E.T". In the games, he is called a "Net Navi" which is similar to an avatar used in an online game I guess and nearly everyone has one, the main character Lan has one, and he controls Mega Man.
