are the Mega Man Battle Network games any good?

Post by noiseredux »

I've never even looked at them. Which is surprising as I'm a big MM fan. But I just figured they were crap. Am I dead wrong? And are they all actually different, or just the same shit but with some extras like how Pokemon Red & Blue are?

No. No. No. Emphatic 'No'. They are repetitive, boring, and not worthy of the name 'Megaman'.

They are basically the same code (not just game but the code itself) repeated over and over and over again.

It is Capcom's own dairy farm.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I really liked the first two megaman battle networks. But after that they got terrible.

I rather enjoyed about half of one of the early games, but it got really baring somewhere around halfway through. From what I've seen all the other games are more or less the same thing.
Oh yeah, and there's lots of inane dialogue that drags on forever.

They're alright I guess, though I only ever played like, 1/3 of the first one before my GBA got stolen. They're pretty much Megaman in name only.

From what I hear, 4 is by far the worst and is generally hated by even fans of the series, so if you're gonna check them out, avoid that one.

If you're looking for a good MM game on GBA, Megaman and Bass actually wasn't half bad. It stuck to its roots (unless you played as Bass. Then it felt like Gunstar Heroes with a megaman level-pack.) Its really hard though. A lot of MM fans I know of say its the hardest Megaman game they've ever played..

Never played any of the Battle Network games, so I can't help ya there.

I'd definitely consider myself a hardcore Mega Man fan, and even I found them relatively lackluster. I didn't think that they were truly terrible, but certainly sub-par for a Mega Man experience. Might be worth it to get them on the cheap (the really cheap), but understand that you aren't missing out if you don't.

I honestly don't even count them as part of the series. They have less in common with Megaman than any other entry in the series.

The Battle Network games are pretty decent IMO, but they are rather repetitive. I don't see how one would play all of the series (I know people do). It has a mix of "collecting" chips and "building" your chip folder, and the battle system is fun (mostly better than traditional RPGs). However, random encounters abound and you will likely get fed up even despite the battle system being good. And then after you played the first Battle Network game, the others will all be *extremely* similar (they make some tweaks here and there and add some novelty, but it is basically more an expansion pack than a new game).

For me the best one of those I played (1, 2, 5) was 5 on the DS, because of the better resolution and map which made me backtrack less. Also it had the possibility to put a "Sneak Run" program that reasonably lowered the random encounter rate continuously (instead of forcing you to spend items for a little time of Sneaking). The game was much more pleasant for me with those. I don't care much about the story of these games and therefore 5 may be a bit weak in that part, but in terms of mechanics I think it's the best one for me by a lot just due to the map.

As for other Megaman games (indeed, the Battle Network games play very differently).
Megaman and Bass on GBA is rather tough - I think it is a port of a SNES game. I don't think though that it is the toughest Megaman game, by far the NES ones I played seemed harder to me.
Megaman Zero series (also on GBA) is rather good (and tough) as well.

Ivo.
