The new Steam: impressions

Post by J T »

So, Steam officially released their new version of the Steam client today. I'm just wondering what you all think of it so far?

Pros:

I think it looks pretty good in some areas, though I had grown attached to my cold tank-like version of Steam. I like the view of your games list where the games are in a small column on the left with a picture and info on the right. That's really cool. I also like the download stats and more integrated info on friends.

Cons:
I wish I had more options to organize my games list. I don't know why Steam doesn't have a folder system or options to organize by genre (which I thought was going to be added). I also don't like how uninstalled games aren't put in their own little section like before. Currently, it's been running slower, but they may just be because I'm using it for the first time and it has to develop a cache for all images related to my games.

I really like the new layout. It's actually inspired me to play more stuff on Steam for whatever reason. Maybe I'll start Aquaria on Steam once I finish Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening on the 360.

Eh, I'm a fan of minimalism and I preferred the old list. Wish I could make the game lines and the window smaller. I guess option 2 is as minimal as I get. But I'll live with it. :P

Also, I've apparently played Borderlands for 88 hours since picking it up at the beginning of the month. Granted that's pretty much all I've played this month.

As I mentioned in the other thread, the thing that bothers me is they removed a nice feature during the beta. You used to be able to display games only from a specific category, in addition to the standard installed, uninstalled, favorites, etc. So I could easily have my Steam list just be the games I launch from Steam. Now I have a longer list (though it does prioritize my category) full of games I'll never launch through the Steam client (but I don't want to uninstall, as I need the game files).

Did they get rid of the Penny Arcade comics? I can't find them anymore. I liked that feature.

besides the store tab I don't see any difference. My games tab is exactly the same as before.

You need to check for updates and then click the restart steam button.

Is there a way to search for MODs on the new Steam? There used to be a whole section for game mods, but I can't find it now. Apparently they still carry certain mods, like Eternal Silence or DIPRIP, but I can't find an organized mods section anymore.
