What would you like to see in a Classic Gaming Mag?
Continuing on what I posted yesterday, I am in the process of starting a Classic Gaming Mag and want some input. What would you like to see included? Yeah I have the standard stuff like reviews, but what would you want to read about? I"m staying away from things like Price Guides, since pretty much as soon as they are published they are out of date. But I'm open to virtually anything else.
Thoughts?

Re: What would you like to see in a Classic Gaming Mag?
I always love the articles on classic games in "Retro Gamer" where they use screenshots to compare all the different ports of the game and highlight each version's strengths and weaknesses.
Comparing ports on the PS3 and 360 nowadays is no fun because the graphical capabilities on both system is so close. But back then, it was more fun to compare because game developers tried hard to push each system port to their limit. So it was more of a challenge. It became a "how great can we make this game look and play on this system." And if you owned a portable like the Game Boy or Game Gear, you may remember how fun it was seeing some of the big games get ported to them. Even if the game turned out terrible, it was still amusing to watch.

Re: What would you like to see in a Classic Gaming Mag?
Rare gamer knowledge and hidden gems would be good. Similar to what the site does here, but centered more on an individual game in the hopes of enticing the reader to track it down and play through it. Usually when I know more about something (a movie, book) before I read/watch it, the experience is enhanced from the history.
Example, Krion Conquest is a know Mega Man rip off, but that's all I know. What else is the game like and (particularly) what could be fun about a play through of the game. Articles that make me want to play the game being discussed. Many times after an AVGN video I'll play the game he reviewed. Having your mag be a resource for games to add to my gaming queue would add to my desire to read new issues.
Any new content or info you can generate on the games of old from doing interviews with the old devs., publishers, or distributors would be good. Something besides the currently know stuff like, Doki Doki is Mario 2 stateside. Basically add new lore to public-domain gaming history. It may take some work finding these old guys, but I am sure it is possible with some research skills. I remember the Gaming Historian had videos where he presented information he gathered by making a few long distance phone calls or emails.
And as a personal thing, I always thought it interesting to know what old games cost when they were first released. I remember some first hand, like Genesis games, but what about old 2600, 7800, and NES games. I know I could research the answer, but little tid-bits or articles about things like that. Things that most gamers probably don't think about, but would be interested to know.
I didn't read your original post, so I hope these suggestions are within the scope of what it is you are trying to do.

I like reading about games I never heard about that are really good and never had the chance to be hits.
Thanks everyone...

I would like to hear about newly released games that have a retro feel or games like battle kid which was just released for the nes...or reviews of virtual console games and how the games compare to the originals. Also maybe reviews of reproduction consoles and controllers. Like there's a knockoff saturn usb pad on amazon that has terrible user reviews, but everyone loves the real one.

That's a great idea about the virtual console vs original. With Screenshots Nes (Composite) Vs Wii (Component)Jrecee wrote:I would like to hear about newly released games that have a retro feel or games like battle kid which was just released for the nes...or reviews of virtual console games and how the games compare to the originals. Comsidering the graphical capabilities of the 16-bit machines and all prior to that... I really doubt there would be much difference in the video quality. After all, the Wii does not support High Definition. However, I'm sure the sound is typically much clearer than their original counterparts.Gnashvar wrote:That's a great idea about the virtual console vs original. I'm working on more episodes of my classic game show ( www.TheVgaTV.com ) and thought for the DVD release I would include a giant banner saying "Presented In Glorious Standard Definition!"

Yeah, I always love comparison articles [I've been looking for a Dragon's Lair comparison, but haven't found anything yet]. Another strategy is to treat the reviews like they would be back when they were released. Take into account the status of the game market at the time, and events surrounding it, and make the review seem like it was taken right out of an old game magazine.Weekend_Warrior wrote:I always love the articles on classic games in "Retro Gamer" where they use screenshots to compare all the different ports of the game and highlight each version's strengths and weaknesses.

It should have pull out posters. Like those 4 page foldouts that show the entire layout of megaman levels and stuff.
