USB turnatbles

Are these worth a shit? Thinking about picking one up but if they are crap I'll have to think about it some more. Anyone here have one of these? Are your experiences with it good or bad?

I've been wanting to get the one from Thinkgeek.com, mostly to burn the old vinyls I have to a CD. I don't really know if they are quality or not.. kinda why I've been putting it off as well.

USB would be more convenient. I use my existing turntable and dump thru the audio input of the sound card.

If you have a real turntable and an audio interface (a simple line-in will do) then you should buy ms.pinky. It's a genuine piece of vinyl that will work with any turntable plugged into an audio interface. The vinyl costs $30 (you get 2 vinyls) on it's own or $80 with the software. It works by having data and timecodes pressed onto the vinyl, then software interprets this information to work out where the needle is on the record allowing you to scratch (I assume this is what you want it for?) any samples on your computer with the feel of real vinyl which just cannot be replicated with those cd/usb 'turntables'.

Of course if you just want something cheap to record vinyls into MP3s/FLACs and don't have a turntable then the USB ones will be fine, however I'd still recommend getting a high quality turntable and audio interface and doing it that way but that's just me.

Actually my old turntable broke and I want one simply to listen to my records with. I figured I could just use my computer for that?

That said, converting them to a format that I can put on my Droid would be a plus too.

i actually bought that turntable and returned it
its not well made
the leather on it was starting to peel off
glue was over used and it looked like some made a "stain" on the inside top cover
its made for smaller records which makes it prone to jump on bigger records
the arm has no weight on it and somewhat flimsy
and sound quality was shit(only came out of one speaker)

This. If you want to record you have to do it in real time anyways, so there's no benefit to using usb. Every usb player I've seen looks like a shoddy pos, for the same price you could get a much nicer normal one on craigslist.

I have one and it seems to work pretty well, I got it for Christmas and couldn't transport it to school so I have yet to use it as much as I want to, but like all things it depends on the brand, mine is an Audio Technica something or other
