I've yet to find a game that has the ability to suck you in like this game does. I put 130 hours into this game and wanted more and was sad to see it end. The game is just beautiful and the gameplay, graphics and story are all top knotch, and really maintain that Dragon Quest feel and experience.
I second all of that, except for the fact that I was around 30 hours in and ran in to a brick wall. That game made me its b*tch. I never had the heart to go grind out the experience needed to get past one boss. Actually, three copies of the same boss. Anyways....I do plan on going back to it one of these days. I just never felt so utterly defeated by an RPG.

But yeah, DQ VIII is great.

I highly recommend:

Dragon Warrior 1 - Classic. Easy to pick up, not long to finish. A great starter RPG.

2,3, and 4 are all great games, don't get me wrong. Two adds additional party members, three lets you build your own party, and four has you play as your party in seperate chapters before you become your main character in a final chapter. I reccomend those, but I'll point you onto V by own bias. Just know that 1&2 are on GBC in a remake, and 3 has one as well. The fourth is available on DS.

Dragon Warrior V - Greatest storyline ever. Monster recruiting and a DS remake make this easy to recommend. I'm way into it and can't talk about it enough.

I've not played VI.

Dragon Warrior VII is pretty incredible in scope. I didn't stay too much with it, but the story involves time travel and building the game continents. You unlock the ability to change classes and things are really wild for customizing. I enjoyed it.

Dragon Warrior VIII - Everything about this one is great. Artistically it shows off 3D versions of the artwork, and I enjoy that. Its game play is every bit as easy to get into as the original games, but includes a Dragonball Z-like power up move. A monstrous RPG with lots to do and see. It's also easy to find and around ten dollars.

I'm always happy to find out other people like Dragon Warrior games.

I agree with everything you said, Dragon Quest is a great franchise, mush better than Final Fantasy IMO. As far as the Dragon Quest VI goes, I think it has the greatest story out of them all (even better than V) and it's my favorite Dragon Quest game. Also part VI was my first Dragon Quest game, so nostalgia plays a part as well :D

...I'm sad to say I remembered why I fell out of love with RPG's.

So much grinding!

I'll leave the RPG's to you folks and stick to platformers and sidescrollers.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
