It's been about a week since I got my first Sega Master System. One of the very first games I got was Space Harrier and since I first played it it has been my most recent obsession. Once you learn to appreciate the pseudo-3D graphics the gameplay is so action packed and addictive it's hard to put down.
After spending a lot of time playing Space Harrier on SMS I had to find out what other versions where made. I learned of Space Harrier II (ordered and on the way) and Space Harrier 32x.
Space Harrier 32x is by far the best looking of the available versions. I didn't really have a reason to get a 32x before but now I'm considering getting my hands on one.
Luckily I can deal with using a emulator for now.
It's just too bad it took me 25 years to discover this game. I could totally see how this game could be modernized... wondering what's taking them so long!

There is a Dreamcast version in Shenmue that is spot on. Also part of Yu Suzuki Game Works for the Dreamcast.
By far the best version:
My first exposure to Space Harrier was years ago when it first appeared in the Arcades years ago. The phenomenal motion chair. Still the best motion response chair around, instant roll as soon as you bump the controller.

Anyway, welcome to the club my friend! Space Harrier rules! It's definitely an old favorite of mine

The PS2 Sega Classics version has new graphics and updated music tracks with same game play. I prefer the older style though.
Here is a great review of all the variations.

I love all versions (that I've played). It's just a great game. I just got the GBA version recently in fact.

A lot of the segments of Sin and Punishment 2 look exactly like what I'd imagine a modern space Harrier to look like, minus the crazy color scheme.

What I love about the 32x version is it's still like the original, in the sense they didn't try to make it REAL 3D. They just took the 2D version and cleaned it up, so it feels more responsive and you can judge distance a lot easier.

Other than the dreamcast one on Shenmue that I love, my favourite one of all is on the Saturn Sega Ages... whichever region you decide to get.
Being such a big fan of Space Harrier, I keep missing the opportunity to pick up the 32x version....

Re: New Love: Space Harrier
My grandmother bought me Space Harrier for Game Gear when I was about 7. I made it really far but could never beat it and the whole time being slightly creeped out. I play it on my PSP and Saturn occasionally and I really see why I was creeped out as a kid. Those level designs are so damn WEIRD. Why are stone heads flying at you? What is that pyramid in the background? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE???
btw, does anyone know why there are Dom Tropen in Space Harrier?
