Just out of curiosity, now that you've got your failure rate fixed what's the cost of the OTP chips vs. the rewritables?

On Mouser.com, the 27C801's range from $5-10, the cheaper ones being OTP.

Just joining in here,

Ziggy, could you list recommended eprom programmers and erasers you have used? Not to mention exact details on the 27C801's chips you used.

Did a brief search of 27C801 on mouser and the results I got are here.

As someone who would be interested in purchasing the materials for this I'd need to know what specific types to look for.
