I certainly dislike lugging the subwoofer and hefty PSU just to be able to listen to console audio using headphones. What's the usual amp of those RCA cables are they enough to power standard headphones? I reckon finding the appropriate converter won't be a problem, but figured I ought to ask first.
Sega did it right with their MK1 Megadrive (stereo on the cheap!) but all manufacturers are just too cheap to consider this option. Does the PSOne even have stereo 3.5mm out?

Re: Headphones for consoles?
The PS1 and PSOne do not have a headphone jack. Only the Gen model 1, then older pong systems have speakers in them in stead of the TV. The 2600 was originally going to have speakers in it too. If you look inside a heavy sixer there are spaces for them. You should look into buying or making an Altoid Tin amp and use that to hook from the RCA audio out to headphones.Pulsar_t wrote:I certainly dislike lugging the subwoofer and hefty PSU just to be able to listen to console audio using headphones. Re: Headphones for consoles?
I have a set of wireless headphones that I use for games; it uses a converter to connect stereo audio cables to my TV's headphone jack. It's a good solution, but I've been looking for a cheap pair of headphones that use an optical connection, so I can make use of that port on my HDTV.

The Turboduo (PC Engine Duo) and the Neo Geo AES both have a headphone jack. The 3DO also does via the original Panasonic controllers.Hobie-wan wrote:Pulsar_t wrote: The PS1 and PSOne do not have a headphone jack. Re: Headphones for consoles?
You can buy adapters that will convert RCA stereo (the red and white cords) to 3.5mm TRS stereo jack
This is what you're looking for, tho I have never seen the first one in the wild so I chain other adapters together to do the same job.

If you want good bass in your headphones it can get a bit expensive. I heard the Beats by Dr. Dre are pretty good for getting a lot of low end without amping and EQing inline. I went for a pair of Sennheiser HDs with an upper bass rating and a Poocket Amp 2 v. 2 to get the best bass out of my mp3 player with what I was willing to spend (the PA2v2 is the same as the altoid amp but professionally made and still cheaper than the competition). I'm very happy with the purchases. If you want something on the cheaper end (under $50) that will still give you a great sound, try getting a set of Koss Porta Pro headphones. I've heard nothing but good things about them as the speakers in them are the exact same as what they use in some of their high-end super-expensive equipment.

Re: Headphones for consoles?
Thank you. Chaining adapters is the way to go it seems, or I could try the Altoid Tin amp.. I don't like bass in my headphones, but thanks for the tip anyway.
I asked this in another topic, but what's the cheapest HDMI->analog receiver?

Does this look good?

Sorry, I should have stated that "I" don't have a system other than the Gen 1 with one.Breetai wrote:The Turboduo (PC Engine Duo) and the Neo Geo AES both have a headphone jack. Interesting that the Duo does as the RX doesn't

Doesn't your TV have a headphone out?
I just plug my beyerdynamic DT250s straight into the TV when I want to get my game on without waking the fiancée.
