Just to throw a monkey wrench in, if I had to guess here's what I guess MrPopo is doing:

He probably downloaded a bunch of game lists from somewhere. Then, for each file (or one huge file, if they're all together), he runs the DOS "type" command, piping the output to the "find" command.*

His input argument string to "find" is simply the given letters with wildcards between them.

So, if the puzzle was: "_l_ _b_ _ _ _ _ _'_ _e_ _ t_ _ _", he'd run:

find "?l??b??? ???'? ?e?? t???" filename.txt

That should give him the line containing:

Plumbers Don't Wear Ties

At least, that's what I'd guess he did, given his comment.

* I'm not certain that the type command is really necessary, but I'm not going to take the time to check.

I guess I agree, though I don't think I should be stripped of my fill-in-the-blanks that I came up with fair n square. Hell, even PoPo should get to keep his even if that is how he came up with it. :|
I wasn't suggesting anyone lose points already accumulated. I am suggesting that we just don't have any more of these.

i guess i have to re-think my battle plan, but as schedule the question coming at 12pm will still be a fill in the blank one. I will only put one letter this time to make it harder and this will be the last one. good luck to all.

Actually, if you want to bias it against computer assistance, you'd be better off filling in more blanks and making it easier. Making it harder just encourages the use of computers.

Also, I think y'all are mostly mature enough to function pretty well on the honor system if it is decided that using regular expressions and major data processing are against the rules.

or instead of game titles you can just do names of characters, places, items, etc?

Well, to be fair, Popo could have just downloaded some game lists and was using "type" to quickly scan through the lists visually to see which titles might match the letters.

I'm pretty sure that IS what he was doing... which isn't exactly the same as coming up with it on yr own.
