Reading this thread it seems most people are against or for no middle ground. The closest was CRTgamer's and my similiar do it but inform them it wasn't yours, show them by example you deserve respect. But if I was in that similiar position as you at that age I would have said no also.

All of you who are saying he should just do as he is told life's not fair. What are you teaching him? He is in school still learning and you already want him jaded?

But I will say this one more time. Please don't forget what it was like to be a child/young. I know you put up with a lot to be adults now, but don't forget who you were and how you felt when people dissmissed you because of your age. Don't be mad at kids because they are playing in a store, they don't want to be there in the first place anymore than you want them there. I as a kid was dragged around everywhere my mom shopped, so excuse me if I wanted to play hide n seek under the racks because I was bored. We have plenty of members here who are young who type or seem highly mature. We are taught tolarance towards people no matter race, nationality, religion and age, but the last only seems inregards to senior citizens. No one period should be prejudged. I do not talk down to kids and being in retail also refer to them as sir or ma'am also. Treat youth with respect and you'll be suprised at the results.

For the record, I can actually empathize with Ziggy and DNT as I was a frequent detention target in high school. I never said they absolutely SHOULD do what they are told, I just indicated that they shouldn't be surprised at the consequences for not doing it or for fighting back in the way they did.

I wouldn't have picked up the trash either, and I would have certainly tried to make my case. However, I wouldn't have done it with any yelling or screaming, smart-assery, or other shenanigans. I always found that when I did these things I lost any credibility with either the person I was debating the issue with and/or with the the administration. When I did on occasion lose my temper or cool, I was completely deserving of the detentions I'd receive for that reason alone (regardless of the original issue). I tried to make most of my detentions count for something (e.g. pranks or "inappropriate jokes" in class and what not), so I always kicked myself a little when I got one just for acting a bit immature when dealing with a stupid issue.

And I want to apologize for my first post. It was very immature. Some things really get under my skin, and such things make me very angry. My second post was just the automatic response to defend myself.

I still stand by my point though. I don't care for the teacher vs student debate. A teacher demanding that a student cleans up trash that's not their own, and the student blindly obeying, gives the teacher the notion that they can make any request of a student, and that the student must obey.

And really, I'm not talking about the teachers (though there are a few). I've actually had a great report with 99% of my teachers. There were a few that I've become very friendly with. But pretty much every (and I'm not generalizing, this is my own experience) aid / hall moniter / whatever you call them in my high school were completely on a power trip.

And just for clarification on my story: I was actually level headed going down to the office. Mind you, I was NOT in trouble, I was going down there on my own free will to complain about the janitor and to defend my friend. As soon as I get down to the office the Principle comes running out screaming at me. Again, I was not in trouble. Why was she yelling at me? She didn't even know what I did wrong, what was she even yelling about? Power trip? Her yelling at me, in my mind, gave me the precursor to respond with equal force. I did not deserve to get yelled at, even if I was in trouble. She was completely in the wrong and I'm glad that I yelled at her. What makes here think she can do that? Maybe in the future she'll think twice about blindly running out of her office and just yelling at the first person she sees.

Again, I was cool going down there. I was gonna make my case as politely as I could. But once that lady got in my face screaming, I lost self control.

But anyways, I'm not angry or anything. I'm not trying to start a fight or nothing. And I do apologize for my first post. I am not very sane in the morning, especially when I read about something like this.

edit: On the subject of detentions I went to one in 9th grade and decided they weren't for me. Every detention I got there after, I paid my friend's little brother to go for me.

Not any request, any reasonable request. Just like if a teacher asks you to run these papers down to the office. And again, if taking 5 seconds out of your day saves you a whole lot of grief why not do it?

I know exactly what you mean. And I've actually studied my high school's code of conduct. It clearly says any "reasonable" request. However, I do not view making a student pick up trash as a reasonable request. I do not touch other people's garbage (maybe I'm a germaphobe?) and I do not wish to eat near a trash can. But it boils down to the hall monitor thinking, if only in the back of their head, "I can tell these kids to do anything and they have to listen or I'll write them up and they'll get a detention." Students do not attend school to pick up trash that is not their own, that's why janitors are employed.

While rapport would have been a better word to use, report still fits as it can be defined as:

I went to a Catholic High school were a dress code was implemented and one of the rules was you had to tuck in your shirt. Once I left a little bit of my shirt in the back untucked after leaving the restroom (I couldn't see it so I didn't know) and this bitch of a teacher went ape shit on may ass and gave me a detention and didn't even give me a chance to explain myself all because I didn't have a little bit of my shirt untucked. I was pissed off, but I knew it was a losing battles so I just took the detention and left. I wanted to Hadouken that bitch to the next state.
