Yeah I'm Aussie.

Unfortunatly, DickSmith has been noobified by woolworths for about 10 years or so now. I asked them if they had a solder sucker (aka desoldering plunger) and the fat noob didnt even know what it was... either did his manager.

I will never shop with them again.

Anyway, I worked out that all I need is a 4050 Hex Buffer (inverting) IC chip. It costs $1.50 at Jaycar... So I can now invert the EMPH line.

I'll be sure to let you guys know when I start constructing it (gotta order parts)... and I'll do a write up with pics.

I'll then finish it all off with an Uber Segata Sanshiro case from ebay! WOOT

My progress on this mod so far... so far so good ^^

Image

I also have an RCA spdif to Toslink fixed down on the RF shield above where the video expansion cart goes.

cant wait to solder it in.

I will also have 3x 3point 2 position switches to switch between spdif and the origional sound processing chip, as these chips have an incoming and outgoing signal from the serial audio input channel... so I suppose its just an extra precaution.

Also, do you guys think I should put a capacitor between the +5v and gnd where the chips are getting thier power??? that other guy did something like that right? does anyone know why?

Cheers

Here you can see the chip I need to solder to. You can see I lifted these three pins.

Image

Then I solder some wires to the pads underneath...

Image

Then I soldered wires to the pins, note the same colour.

Image

Then I insulated and fixed down the wires with masking tape.

Image

And then I stuck down the wires for the pins to avoid them breaking the legs off the chip.

You guys will have to excuse the bad soldering... I really need a new iron... too big and dirty >_< but it should be good enough i hope ^^

Whats the real result from this? I'm just curious because If it's better audio quality that's noticeable I'd be interested in doing it too

it worked nicly... I tested it on a big onkyo reciever at my local electronics shop and turned up the juice...

I was not disapointed. it sounded like everything I thought toslink would sound like. then I hit the A+B function on the reciever!

I am making a few more minor adjustments to it, and then I will do a write up so we can all enjoy spdif ^^

maybey after tonight I will finish the mounting the switch in a better spot on my hacked case.

i will probably make a new thread while I'm at it too.

Someone mentioned an N64 SPDIF mod. Looking for details on this as I have SNES, PS1, SS, and DC done already.

Finished building my case, now I just need labels for my switches.

I will not worry about the labels and start a new thread soon on how to do this mod. (starting tonight after Work and Japanese class)

I will re-upload resized pics for easier viewing/reading.

Design of Sega Megadrive 1 digital audio is also nearing completion.
