Any Gang Starr fans?
Im sure you guys might have already heard that Guru, one half of Gang Starr, is no longer with us. I personally am heartbroken as Gang Starr was a huge part of my High School life soundtrack. Anyone else on here down with the Gang Starr?

I didn't hear about this. Sad, sad news. I have Sirius radio and listen to Backspin (the old school hip station) and they play alot of Gang Starr. RIP.

Re: Any Gang Starr fans?
Dude this is depressing. Gang Starr was one of the best Hip-Hop groups ever, and I'd always hoped they'd eventually get back together for something. I'll have to go bust out Step In The Arena now to cheer myself up.

Huge fan... huge loss.
Heard today around lunch and took the rest of the day off to listen to Jazzmatazz all day.
The Monotone legend will be missed!
To me the coolest thing Guru was responsible for as an artist would probably be the Jazzmatazz series - a series of albums which are an infusion of hip hop with Jazz. Since hip hop is heavily rooted in jazz, it works exceptionally well. Volume 1 is probably the best, although it does show its age in some of the rapping (1991 I think)... but who doesn't love the old school? Most of the songs are half Guru's smooth monotone voice rapping over the Jazz artists, the other half horn solos and just going off like jazz does in its true freestyle form. Track 2 - "loungin'" and Track 5 - "No Time to Play" are probably the best representations of the concept.

Fart. That sucks.
I still have GangStarr cassettes. Not my favorite rap group, but they definitely had some great hits. Love the minimalistic beat style they had.
