Damn, I had a HUGE wall of text explaining just how awesome Deus Ex was in another thread. It even convinced the user I was replying to to install it. I can't remember which thread it was in and can't find it in a search.Anayo wrote:Will you guys enlighten me as to what makes Deus Ex so awesome? Maybe I will play it on my PC.

It's a perfect blend of FPS and RPG that rewards you for thinking and planning instead of mindlessly blowing everything up. Which is not to say you can't mindlessly blow everything up; you just need to plan ahead of time to set your skills and augmentations to facilitate that. It also has a great story set in a dystopian future and features several popular conspiracy theories.

Re: What are some good past PC games to play?
First of all STORY AAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++++++++++
Seriously this is one of those games that takes advantage of the length of the medium, and tells a story that couldn't be recreated in any other medium but a book, and yet it's better than a book because of perfect voice acting, great cinematic moments, and well you know..... being playable.
There are tons of choices. Let me just tell you about the opening mission.
A terrorist group has set up base in the statue of liberty, and the higher ups want to see how you do. Your options are
A) To sneak to the other side of the island to get a password for the front gate from a man. You have to tell the man the right "password" for him to give the password to you.
B) Go in, guns blazing from the front door.
C) Go guns blazing from the much safer back door.
D) Go stealth from the back door, by climbing on top of crates, hacking security systems, using poison arrows to silently take out the enemies.
Once you get to the terrorist's leader you can either kill him, or bring him in for questioning. There is also a side mission, to save a fellow agent who has been captured (you have to do it before confronting the terrorist leader). If you are successful you will get extra credits and skill points, which will equal better weapons and upgrades. And also the story will change a bit to reflect the fact that you either saved him or didn't.
You play the role of a cyborg agent, so you can upgrade your body, which has impact on the action of the game.
For example you can become a better swimmer, which makes it easier to use
the water route when available (very useful for stealth play).
You can become better at firearms, or mellee weapons, or explosives you name it. Better of course equals better accuracy and better damage. But beware you can't level every single skill so you have to pick carefully.
You also get special canisters, that give you special skills, which you activate for a short period of time, cause it drains energy and well you are a cyborg, so you need to recharge it at some energy droids. There are skills like increased strength so you can move around bigger crates, to find new paths by climbing ladders for example. Also I think there was a power up that reduced radiation damage while it was turned on. Can't remember any more right now.
god I have more to say but I'm quite tired right now. Hope you guys got the picture otherwise I'm coming back to convince you why this game is one of the best games of all time.
Just stay away from the sequel.

Re: What are some good past PC games to play?
Just to be the voice of dissent, I like FPS and RPG games both, but I really don't like Deus Ex. I have a copy that came with a video card and I've tried to play it 4 or 5 times. I made it into the first big building once, but something about it put me off. Though I admit that I just can't get into System Shock 2 either. I made it past the mini sub incident in Bioshock, but something about that games turns me off too.Anayo wrote:Will you guys enlighten me as to what makes Deus Ex so awesome? But you should fetch the demo which can still be found online and give it a shot. If you like it there are tons of copies out there to get hold of.

There should be a sticky for PC retro recommendations. Every month 5-10 topics like this keep popping up.

Not just a sticky, an article under "guides" would be great too. I thought someone was working on that.Pulsar_t wrote:There should be a sticky for PC retro recommendations. Every month 5-10 topics like this keep popping up.

I'm grabbing it. What about the sequel?
Re: What are some good past PC games to play?
Honestly, I'd say skip it. The story's decent, but it suffers from the worst case of consolitis I've ever seen.Octopod wrote:I'm grabbing it. What about the sequel?
