I wouldn't use a CF card, they don't support TRIM and the sheer amount of read/writes of an operating system will see the card become completely unusable very quickly. Flash memory only supports a finite amount of writes before you can no longer write to it anymore, SSD drives handle data very differently than CF/SD flash etc. They spread writes out over the entire disk to maximise the life of the drive.

They're all flash memory. 'Thumb' drives spread the data around too to prevent uneven wear.

It's worth noting that every iPod mini has a 4G
Hitachi microdrive in it.

It should be noted, however, that microdrives are slightly larger than
most Compact Flash cards (the CF type-II form factor.) They won't fit
in a type-I CF slot.
