Beat Hazard - New indie game!!

Post by jeffro11 »

Hey all, this is a new indie game for Xbox360/PC. It's called Beat Hazard.

Image

It's based on music, basically when there's a beat your weapons will fire. However when there's a fast beat or lots of crazy music, there are also many enemies! The core game play is that of Asteroids and Geometry Wars. It's super addicting and tons of fun, only $7.49 on steam!! It's made solely by one person, help him out!! Support him!

Here is a video of me playing a song in case you want to see what its all about. If you don't like classic metal, don't watch.

It looks really awesome, though I would probably end up having an epileptic fit if I tried to play...

I bought Beat Hazard on Steam and I want to like it, but it doesn't quite hit the mark. Theoretically it lets you play a shooter game where the visuals are affected by your music collection. It only supports MP3 at the moment and most of my music is in i-tune m4a format, so that sucks. The gameplay is ok, but sometimes the movement isn't fine-tuned enough to snake your way through a wall of bullets. Also, there is this stupid setup where you have to collect volume powerups to increase the volume of your music. This is meant to be some sort of reinforcer, but really it just means every level is lame until you get enough powerups that your music finally kicks in at a decent volume.

Still, the game is pretty fun and its a great concept that is executed fairly well (as long as you're not prone to seizures because it's crazy with the flashing). I sort of dig it and I'm hoping that it gets patched to include more file types. It should be much more enjoyable then. Maybe it will just take some time.

I added the developer on Steam and asked him some questions. He is going to add support for m4a, wma, ogg and (maybe) flac. He has fixed some other minor issues such as vsync already! Anyways, I love this game.

The game sounds like an Action-Oriented AudioSurf. :)

I've tried a few other songs. The game has it's moments. When everything comes together, it really is quite a spectacle. I was playing to a track by Yoav that built up nicely in the music, the visual flashes, and the action on screen. I was impressed with that.

I still find it frustrating that I have to work for volume though.

Just tried the demo, it's pretty cool. I could get some insanely stupid scores if I could make it through some of my 2 hour DJ sets.

I'm not sure I'd play it long enough to get $10 of fun our of it other than trying for super marathon games, but I'll definitely pay attention if I catch it on sale.

Once you get to level 20 (which takes a few hours of play) you start off at full power, which is nice. But the problem with the game is that if your music isn't loud enough your weapon doesn't do enough damage but there's still a ton of enemies. Plus inertia in a shmup is bullshit. But really, the whole thing can be summed up by the fact that Highway Star is pretty much unplayable in the game. That proves the game falls short of the mark.
