I want to ask a little question regarding a certain video game. Whenever this video game is brought up, it appears that some fans hold nothing but disdain for it for whatever reason. Seeing as how I have never played the game, I don't want to expand my overall viewpoint of the game, which is simply Square-Enix awkardly trying to copy Charlie's Angels.
I want to know why you guys hated FFX-2. Was it the fanservice? Was it the opening scene where "Yuna" sings at a pop concert? Was it where (spoiler) Tidus was brought back? Or was it none of the above?
Why do you hate Final Fantasy X-2?

With X-2 it felt like they missed the mark on every count. The story kinda blows, and is a vast departure from the previous game. The Dressphere system is interesting in concept, but the combat didn't feel balanced. The black mage felt completely useless, and it had a chaining system that I found to be very hard to take advantage of. XIII does a much better job with mid-battle job changes and chaining.

Mostly, that it signaled Square's fall from grace. Final Fantasy X-2 could have easily been an original title, with all new characters, an all-new story and everything else.
Instead, it was just an attempt to milk a proven entry in the series, which would foreshadow the Advent of a Crisis - that Square couldn't stop milking old Final Fantasy games. After Years of never making direct sequels, they became Activision. Only a Dirge would be fitting, as the Square we knew is dead - they are no more than a Revenant at this point.

Let's be fair; After Years is pretty good.the7k wrote:Mostly, that it signaled Square's fall from grace. Final Fantasy X-2 could have easily been an original title, with all new characters, an all-new story and everything else.

And I enjoyed Revenant Wings - it still could have been (and should have been) it's own unique experience.MrPopo wrote: Let's be fair; After Years is pretty good.
Final Fantasy VI is my favorite Final Fantasy, but I see no reason to make a sequel to it. If they want to make another game that uses Final Fantasy VI's visual style, that's great. A good idea, too, considering it's graphics are pretty timeless. I just see no reason to make a continuation to a game that was meant to end there.

This is why I love the Megami Tensei games and Atlus as a company. They self-contain their work. Megami Tensei FTW.the7k wrote:Mostly, that it signaled Square's fall from grace. And FFX-2 is hated like most shit sequals are hated, many feel they take away from the original.

Final Fantasy X-2 had a pretty disappointing story and as others have mentioned it was Square trying to cash in on a quick sequel.

Well, there are a few games that are made as direct sequels - Devil Summoner being the most obvious.JokermanJohnny wrote: This is why I love the Megami Tensei games and Atlus as a company. They self-contain their work. Megami Tensei FTW.
However, the Devil Summoner series always felt to me like it was going for an 'episodic' RPG, and that's just fine if that was the original intention. It's turning a self-contained work into a series that ticks me off. (Looking at you, Compilation of Final Fantasy VII)
