Which is a superior connection: Optical digital or HDMI?
Re: Which is a superior connection: Optical digital or HDMI?
Interesting, thanks for the correction. What major games for PS3 support 1080p? I know of VT3 and Wipeout HD, but nothing else.

I think most PSN titles support 1080p. Of all the games I own these are the ones that support 1080i or 1080pPulsar_t wrote:Interesting, thanks for the correction. What major games for PS3 support 1080p? I know of VT3 and Wipeout HD, but nothing else.
Disgaea 3: 1080p
Warhawk: 1080i
Eye of Judgment: 1080i
Singstar: 1080p
Pretty dismal really.

My understanding is that 720p is superior to 1080i. Is that not correct?

720p is progressive scan.Octopod wrote:My understanding is that 720p is superior to 1080i. Is that not correct?
1080i is interlace scan.
Progressive Scan tends to be a more stable pic, but the 1080i gives you a higher resolution. A tradeoff, with good HD the 108i would be better, but might as well use the 1080p mode for the best.

Re: Which is a superior connection: Optical digital or HDMI?
It depends on your upscaler. A decent upscaler will de-interlace that 1080i image and essentially give you 1080p. 1080i is the same resolution as 1080p hence the name, it just means that each line is rendered alternately rather than progressively ie all lines at once. So depending on the quality of your screen 1080i and 1080p will look the same (if it has a decent de-interlacer) my Viera displays 1080i identical to 1080p.

Concerning the 1080p (or 1080i) I was thinking more along the lines of the PS3's BluRay capability. Doesn't BluRay output in 1080?
Ow! My small intestine!
Re: Which is a superior connection: Optical digital or HDMI?
YES, go with that HDMI cable. Because of YLOD issue I would get a dedicated Blu Ray player, save PS3 for only gaming.Scooter wrote:Concerning the 1080p (or 1080i) I was thinking more along the lines of the PS3's BluRay capability. Doesn't BluRay output in 1080?

Yeah just buy any old HDMI cable from ebay. People talking about signal degradation or poor quality signal are talking bollocks. It's a digital cable, it will only suffer from signal degradation over vast distances (EG I have a cheap £25 15m cable that suffers from no signal degradation whatsoever and that's a big 'ol cable too) I recently bought a £2.50 HDMI cable from ebay which works perfectly. Don't pay over the odds for HDMI cable they all do the exact same thing.

You can also get one off Amazon for like $3 shipped. Can't go wrong, really.
