It's all soft mods at this point, chips can actually be a hindrance.

Grab latest compatible IOS
Patch with waninkoko
install NeoGamma or USBLoader into HBC
Burn or load games from USB drive
I have no idea what IOS or wininkoko is. I want to play my NTSC-J games directly from disc. I assume it can be done?

I'd actually tried watching DVD movies on the Wii before and, while it worked, it wasn't perfect so I never bothered again.
You need to install a custom IOS to add features that aren't compatible with the Wii at default. Think Custom Firmware on PSP. That is similar to Custom IOS on Wii.

Okay. I do know a bit about it from when I first got into a bit of Wii homebrew a couple years ago.

In summery, playing my NTSC-J games (via original discs!) on an NTSC-U systems is not difficult at all, correct? And... no Zelda required, just an SD card OR a USB hard drive?

Yeah, just an SD card is required. Simply put the banner bomb files on the SD card and thats it. Once you have HBC on your Wii you can run anything. Which means running .dol or .wad files.

Or actual discs? I'm a traditionalist like that. :)

This is where it starts to get tricky. Enabling Homebrew Channel gives you the ability to run 'homebrew' and nothing more. It won't give you the ability to run burned/import games or run cracked Wiiware/VC games. These are all features that are added to the machine once you can run unsigned code on it. You need to use a softmod installer to add these extra functions. HBC just gives you the ability to run the installer. Nothing more.
