Well I finally gave my Model 2 Genesis a much needed upgrade. S-Video! It worked out well. Looks fantastic as well! I didn't mod the case because I really don't like to ruin a console that is already perfect
If I ever get a new CRT TV with better S-Video option in my "retro room" rest assured that I'll be doing an S-Video mod to my Genesis. Gotta fix that loose AC jack one day too.
I've been doing some tinkering with the mod. I've been reading the Sega-16 forums and everyone says you don't need to amplify the signal from a CXA1645, only from the CXA1145. However I believe this is false (partly false), I removed my transistor and there was no where near as much contrast between the black and whites... (I'm only amplifying the Luma output, chroma has no noticeable difference). Anyways, just thought I'd share that in case anyone reads this!
nice work, it's always hard for me to believe that some of these old consoles didn't have s-video/stereo sound/etc.
but then again, i don't own a single tv with s-video, so...

They took or left out things because saving 2 cents worth of parts that a bean counter figured nobody would miss saves them a ton of money in manufacturing over the number of consoles produced. The NES had composite, but they removed that in the mini. The SNES had S-video, but they removed it for the mini. The GC had the composite out, but they removed that too. The Gen 1 bragged about stereo sound but they chose to only output it through the headphone jack. Magnavox went with a stupid proprietary UHF box instead of using the same one that all other 70s and early 80s game consoles and home computers used. *shrug*

Atari the worst only offering RF, talk about following behind. I can understand the older 2600, but 5200 and 7800 should at minimal have a factory composite option. Really thinking about that S-Video mod on my 5200 Hobie-wan.
