Are there certain things you see pop up over and over again in certain genres that drive you nuts? One of the most annoying things about the game industry is that most developers just copy what everyone else is doing like sheep. Few think outside the box. Here's a couple things I hate about certain genres
RPGS
The randomness of everything. Random enemy drops, random spawns, random chance to hit, random chance to get ambushed by enemy, random battles, random this, random that. God, it drives me nuts. It's especially bad in Japanese rpgs. Final Fantasy 12 was hell for a lot of people because of the fifty billion resets you had to do to get chests to spawn AND to get them to spawn with the item you wanted. Oh, and nothing is more annoying than killing three Adamantoises in a row in Final Fantasy 13 and not getting a single Platinum Ingot or Trap to drop. Considering how much work and preparation it takes to bring them down, their drops should be GUARANTEED. That's called rewarding players, rather than screwing them over, which Japanese developers seem to love doing
Action games
Why does every action game have to be bogged down by stupid assinine puzzles, lame fetch quests, and ridiculous platform exercises? Do we have to copy EVERYTHING Devil May Cry brought to the genre, including the crappy stuff? And OH MY GOD let me not forget the greatest evil in gaming today QUICK TIME EVENTS!! Thank you Resident Evil 4 and God of War for bringing these accursed things back into the industry
Point and Click Adventure games
There is always at least one or two puzzles that make no sense at all and require lots of trial and error to figure out. Something that really annoyed me with quite a few SCUMM games I've played. There is a difference between something requiring lateral thinking and something just not making any sense at all
I could go on, but let me open up this topic to the forum

I hate World War II shooters, cause if they advertised themselves honestly they'd all be called Saving Private Ryan: the Game.

Racing Games (Excluding battle racing games):
They are usually the same thing over and over again and get boring super fast.
RPGs:
I've always had trouble getting into an RPG especially after just completing another one.
Platformers:
There needs to be more 2D ones.
First person shooters:
There needs to be less.

I hate grinding in turn rpg's, lame non realistic tiles and sprites, and random fighting in dungeons. Specially when you can not save there. Ironically, I love RPG's.
I hate pits or no-floor on platformers. I dont know why but it puts me on my nerves, fearing the fall all the time.
I dislike real characters in the game telling you "press this button", specially in modern adventure games, trying to be serious. ¿Isnt there a way to teach you that without using characters? Imagine you're flirting with a girl at a pub and she says "To get laid with me, press X and O randomly"

Fighters: Too damn complex. I'd have an easier time fighting in a real martial arts tournament than getting good at SFII.

without actually getting into the entire universe of thoughts i have about game mechanics and game critiquing... if they just effing let me work for them as some sort of "idea checker" every game would be way sweeter. i guess they think that position is filled... i say it's half full and that's why every genre has it's annoying flaws. but at the same time, it's sad to say that the video game industry seems to be run by the same sort of jackasses that run the pop music industry. if one certain game mechanic made some game studio lots of money, then the other guys have to do it to, just so they can feel like their studio will be alive next year. er something like that.

Side Scrollers: Birds. I fucking hate birds or anything else that flies and pushes me off a cliff.
RPG: Grinding, obviously. Also checkpoint saves that take more than 5-10 minutes to get to. I shouldn't be punished for wanting to get on with my life. Unpausable cut scenes are also a bitch.
SHMUPS: Losing all powerups at some hard-as-balls checkpoint then being stuck with some wimpy pee shooter that is worthless. Gradius I through V, I'm looking at you. I swear, if you die once in those games you might as well just hit reset.
Online Multiplayer: Stacking the deck against the noobs. I hate when online games give bonuses and powerups to those that have played longer and won more matches. They won already, they don't need helpful bonuses, they need a a handicap. Also, I hate when there is no matching system at all. Noobs get pwned repeatedly while they try to figure out which button is used for firing. It just makes people never want to start a game. Even if you buy the game on day one, there's always some dude who has done nothing but beta test the game for the past 2 months of his life and he is just dying to kick your ass.
Any genre: I hate pointless fetch quests. Superficially lengthening the game does not increase the fun, just the length. Boring and unskippable tutorial levels. I like when they are built in to the game and teach you things quickly (see Portal), but they usually belabor the explanations of gameplay and put you to sleep before you get around to the actual game. This is especially bad for genres like FPS games where the game is controlled like every other FPS game: AWSD for movement, mouse for shooting, a few variations on what key crouches, jumps, or runs and you're good to go. No need for explanation.
Puzzle Games: Match 3. Ok, some of the best puzzle games are basically match 3 games (Puzzle Quest, Bejeweled), but those games brought something unique to the table like powerups and RPG elements. If you just create another game about matching, you've contributed nothing.

Gradius V was better about that. You instantly respawn and you can pick up your options. All the Gradius games should've been like this. Hell, Salamander should've been the main series.J T wrote:SHMUPS: Losing all powerups at some hard-as-balls checkpoint then being stuck with some wimpy pee shooter that is worthless. Depends on how it's done. I recently started Nocturne, and I've been doing some grinding. But they keep it interesting. While I'm fighting demons over and over and over, I'm also talking to them and fusing them and seeing what happens. This makes the grinding quite a bit more entertaining than most RPGs.J T wrote: RPG: Grinding, obviously. Also checkpoint saves that take more than 5-10 minutes to get to. As for checkpoints, constant checkpoints take a lot of challenge out of a game. There's something to be said for being forced to be damn sure you're ready for a dungeon before you head into it.
