wait... do you literally mean that SML is the best Super Mario Bros game? That's amazing. Wow. Most people hate it. I absolutely love it. I can beat it over and over again and still love. (I mean, it was the first game I played on my favorite console). But I personally consider Super Mario World the best game in the series. Anyway, wow. That's awesome. having played Super Mario series in "chronological" order (apart from the "real" SMB2; JP release that is; which I didn't try until it came out on the SNES), I must say that I found this title to be the most appealingnoiseredux wrote:wait... do you literally mean that SML is the best Super Mario Bros game? don't get me wrong, I love me some Super Mario World as well
but there was something truly captivating about Super Mario Land (I hadn't tried any of the GB Super Mario games, until yesterday)
it was short, but had so much substance to it; wonderful graphics and it managed to keep me interested throughout the whole experience
Super Mario World can take me about a month to complete, due to me losing interest in it over time; as I can't focus long enough to play it through in one sitting, same goes for the rest of the series (which I've played thus far, that is)
this was a nice short burst of pure fun.
and *fun* is the important aspect of this (IMO), since I fully enjoyed the whole experience, ranging from the different take on the franchise (submarines, space-ships(?), "new" (to me) enemies, fantastic level-design and truly memorable graphics; and not to mention the fireball... I loved that)
there was just so much packed into that little cartridge, that I couldn't put it down
at first I thought, I wouldn't enjoy it, due to the lack of colors; but it didn't bother me at all, since I felt so compelled to "just play"
I'm going to play it through more times, just to see if I can beat my own highscore (which I hope has been saved on cartridge(?))
but first I'll have to give Super Mario Land 2 a try
the *main* reason I started playing Super Mario Land 1 (apart from the fact that it's one of the few I've never tried), was because I've just gotten Wario Land, which is titled "Super Mario Land 3", hence I figured I should do it "chronologically"
the most I've played any monochrome GB game thus far has been Kid Icarus of Myth & Demons (if I remember the name correctly) and even if that is a far cry from Super Mario Land in terms of gameplay, it was still the first GB game I owned (apart from Pokémon Red, which I traded to get Kid Icarus)
mind you that I've only owned a Gameboy (color) for about 2 years, so I am still very new to this scene; and I'm hoping there are more titles out there that appeals to me (I've only really gotten into the Zelda titles on the GBC, since I've always been a huge fan of the series)
I am happily surprised that I can find "older" titles like Super Mario Land to be so extremely satisfying and fun to experience, these many years after their release
I've been focusing too much on fancy NDS graphics and forgotten to play the classics ^^
time to start collecting some GB/GBC games as well, I'd reckon =)

Did you try Partner's in Time on the DS? I recently finished it and found it to be really fun. I actually picked up Bowser's Inside Story right after, but decided to play some other stuff as a break from that style of gameplay. It's not that I don't like the Mario & Luigi games, but I just needed to freshen it up.Mr.White555 wrote:Contra 3 & 4

Not Mr.White, but having just beat Bowser's Inside Story as well, I'll say that overall it was easier than Superstar Saga since healing is easy, you have Retry Clocks, which set the battle back with you at full HP and SP and all of your items back if you die, and they practically throw money at you. However, like Superstar Saga the final boss is a bitch.jfe2 wrote: Did you try Partner's in Time on the DS? I recently finished it and found it to be really fun. Don't remind me about Cackletta! I must have fought her close to 30+ times before finally beating her. The Shroob Queen in PiT was hard as well, but nowhere NEAR the frustrating level of Cackletta!AmishSamurai wrote:Not Mr.White, but having just beat Bowser's Inside Story as well, I'll say that overall it was easier than Superstar Saga since healing is easy, you have Retry Clocks, which set the battle back with you at full HP and SP and all of your items back if you die, and they practically throw money at you. I had partners in time but I never got around to finishing it. Stupid me I loaned the thing and never got it back.jfe2 wrote:

Bowser's Inside story is in my top three favorite ds games. Never played a game that utilized the system in as a great and creative way. The Bowser battles are the epitome of epic boss fights. The game is a whole lot better than partners in time in my opinion. Partners in time seemed too much of rehash where as Bowser's Inside Story was some thing completely different. I HIGHLY recommend you to play it. Hell I would recommend it to any who likes video games.

There is a problem with Partners in Time lately: for some reason, it's getting expensive. It costs more than the other two, on the internet. Glad I got mine before it got pricey. *gloat gloat*jfe2 wrote: Did you try Partner's in Time on the DS? I recently finished it and found it to be really fun.

Excitebike: World Rally - WiiWare *new*
I came home from work tonight with the intention of playing a bit of Gradius, basically just to see if I could beat that damn Easter Island head boss. I ended up going on a roll and beating the whole game! Gradius purists would probably consider my victory cheap since I used the level select to continue at the Easter Island head boss, but I don't care. Gradius ReBirth was HARD! Fast reflexes and quick thinking kept me alive, and it was a complete rush for the time it lasted.
After I beat that I decided to play something a bit less intense and fired up Excitebike: World Rally. I was already close to finishing all of the tracks, and ended up doing so tonight. I got all S-Rank on the first two cups, but the second two really ramped up the difficulty, and I got mostly A-Ranks, with a couple of B-Ranks on the more difficult tracks. One thing's for sure, much like the original Excitebike, this game has a TON of replay value.
Also, Luke may be happy to know that I played Punchout!! for a little bit tonight, at my son's request.
I beat Glass Joe on title defense mode, but Von Kaiser managed to stop me in my tracks. I think I got his pattern down, I just need to be a little faster at dodging his attacks. I had trouble dodging his charging uppercut, but I think I figured how to judge which way to dodge.

You'll knock out Kaiser in no time. Trust me, you'll get addicted to the last defense title.jfe2 wrote: Also, Luke may be happy to know that I played Punchout!! for a little bit tonight, at my son's request.I beat Glass Joe on title defense mode, but Von Kaiser managed to stop me in my tracks.
