My wife and I started our own little website projects over the weekend and have registered our domains. We have a friend who is going to build our sites for free but for now I just want to post a "coming soon" to the page.
Questions:
1) Do I have to have webhosting for one simple page?
2) When I do upgrade who is the best?
3) I want to do a forum based site who is the best for that?

1. Yes you need to host all your pages. A simple HTML place holder can be hosted on a number of free hosts, just do a google search for them. They will all be suitable for just a basic html page, then redirect your domain name to the webhost page that you make.
However, if you have a PC that is always switch on you can host it on your machine using something simple like XAMPP. It's a simple installer and is compatible with OS X and Windows. It walks you through the entire process. When that is set up put your 'coming soon' page as index.html in your htdocs folder in your xampp folder (or whatever you designated as the htdocs folder when you install xammpp). Then use DYNDNS to redirect the dynamic IP of your network to your domain name provider. If you are behind a router it may be a little tricky to get the ports forwarding correctly if you don't know how to do so.
2. Haven't bought hosting in such a long time so I can't help you with that.
3. You need a host that supports PHP and MYSQL (of course there are other forum software out there that use other languages, but the best software, PHPBB3 and vBulletin both use it). You can get by with a host that provides just one MYSQL database, but it's usually best if you have at least 2, since if you expand the rest of your site to include a shop or a content management system (CMS) you'll want to have a separate database for those.

I would try to avoid GoDaddy, I've read stories of them rooting your box when they decide they need to access something.
