The Best 2D Playstation 2 Games

Post by racketboy »

I've had a few people asking for a list of the best 2D games for a given platform.
I figured the PS2 would be a good place to start since we already have a PS1 thread going (and I already have a good list for Dreamcast and Saturn)

edit:
Here's my list:

I need some time to think about this, but Gradius V and the good Contra need to be on that list.

I'm going to ignore ports -- the metal slugs, the street fighters, etc. Original titles, only.

Grim Grimoire
Odin Sphere
Alien Hominid
Mushishema
Ibara
Dodonpachi
Stag XII

... and, wow, my mind stops working.

You could count the spirte based isometric games such as:

Disgaea I and II
La Pucelle Tractics

Pity Twinkle Star Sprites Princess is 3D.

I'll say viewtiful joe. not really 2D but it still kick arse. It's gameplay is 2Dish so that is good enough for me. Oh and Alien hominid of course :)

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I don't know about Viewtiful Joe since it was originally a GC exclusive. I have to say no to Alien Hominid since I can play the Flash version for free. :P

Well the question was best 2d games for ps2. Not the best exclusive 2D games for ps2, and since these are two games I have and use heavily ( albeit Alien hominid on the Xbox) I figured they were worth mentioning.

I thought it was fun -- there were lots of cheap shots, but it was fun.

I admit ,I came for the pretty pictures but I stayed for the crazy fast button mashing gameplay.
I challenge anybody to play 2 or 3 levels of Alien Hominid without feeling like thier thumb was about to snap off but still want to go on anyway.
It just has something beneath the surface that makes it so much fun that I can't quite pinpoint, but it's there and i love it.

I think Alien Hominid came out for both systems in the same year and both versions are pretty much the same. So I don't really associate it with either system. I do think of Viewtiful Joe as a Gamecube game though, just like Resident Evil 4. The PS 2 versions are just ports. But hey, if you've only got a PS 2 they're worth playing.

Alien Hominid is not a bad game. The main game is hilarious despite being a bit cheap at times. Like Metal Slug lite, which is still pretty sweet. What further sells the game for me is the really long and really fun optional game that plays like sort of a platform game. The two games combined make the game worthwhile for me, but I'd definitely rate the best Contra or Metal Slug games over it.

Odin Sphere sucks. Haven't tried Grim Grimoire though

Klonoa 2 is a great, very old school platformer.

Megaman X8 is decent, though it does have 3-d graphics. A decent action platformer, though certainly not one of the series' best.

If we're okay with 3-d graphics, then I'd echo someone else who mentioned the good Contra game. That would be Shattered Soldier, which looks absolutely awesome from videos I've seen.

Everything else that comes to mind is a PS 1 game. Hmmm, I wonder how many great 2-d PS 2 games I've missed out on.
