I had actually planned to play it through again this Easter, but unfortunately as I went to boot up the game after coming back from Easter I was shocked to see my Saturn doesn't work (long story, see other threads lol).
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Re: Panzer Dragoon Saga
Yes, I have Panzer Dragoon Saga!
Mine doesn't have the instructions though, but I still have the cardboard casing. It's one of my favourite games of all time, definitely a classic RPG. Whilst many think this game hasn't aged as well as, say FF7, I do still think this is one of the best games ever and an absolute joy to play. I think one of my favourite things about the game is how great the battle system is. It's really unique and works so well.

I don't recall. I was annoyed by the pop-in whilst flying in the canyons though, but that was also in the original game.GSZX1337 wrote:I haven't tried PDF, I'm not into RPGs. I've been meaning to check out more RPGs and learn more about them. The only ones I'm familiar with are FF1/2 for the GBA, FF8-X-2, Super Mario RPG, and Legend of Dragoon. (I think I might revisit that game) I want to play Atelier Marie, but the translation isn't finished, yet.
How was the emulation on PDS? I emulated Hyper Duel (not full screen) and it played well, with some occasional slowdown. I wish you could apply filters.
PDS is a unique case among JRPGs. It doesn't take too much grinding to advance, and the storyline is above par compared to the usual dross that passes as stories in JRPGs. 10-15 hour games are a rarity and if someone has suggestions please share them with us!
I can safely recommend Chrono Trigger for the DS. I actually enjoyed that one, whereas none of the FFs really did it for me.

Re: Panzer Dragoon Saga
got this for xmas. The way i see it, there is no reason this series should have died. easily the best battle system i've ever played, i really like how theres very few NPC's walking around in the towns. story is really great.
anyone else HATE the voiceovers? I know they gave the game its own unique laungage but that bugs the living hell out of me.
On my first playthrough, i got hardly any of the secret stuff. Im considering doing another play through with a guide so i can get all the stuff i missed.
If this series had been on a playstation or nintendo console, there would probably be quite a few sequels by now. its really too bad that the timing of the games released more or less killed it (at least in the us). how i would love a sequel (a JRPG sequel. Orta is great, but i want another panzer rpg)

The cutscene voiceovers is that manufactured language, but I believe all the in game voices are just standard Japanese.Pabstblueribbon wrote:anyone else HATE the voiceovers? I know they gave the game its own unique laungage but that bugs the living hell out of me.

If my memory serves me, I believe the final dragon upgrades don't even unlock until the second playthrough.Pabstblueribbon wrote:On my first playthrough, i got hardly any of the secret stuff. Im considering doing another play through with a guide so i can get all the stuff i missed.
It really is a astounding game, despite its brevity. There's no grinding, distractions are minimal, and every single battle in the game is strategic and fun. It's short, but every minute of the game is worth exploring.
I'm very surprised that someone claims that it hasn't aged as well as Final Fantasy VII, of all games, which is a game that has aged horribly. Despite Saturn not being a 3D powerhouse, the Panzer Dragoon games still look polished for their time period. Final Fantasy VII, then and even more pronounced now, is somewhat of a mess of polygons, only saved by its prerendered backgrounds and pretty cutscenes (in which the characters still look terrible).
Moreover, Final Fantasy VII didn't particularly do anything new in the terms of gameplay, whereas Panzer Dragoon Saga did something that has yet to have been duplicated. I'd say Panzer Dragoon Saga has aged pretty damn well.
Re: Panzer Dragoon Saga
I don't think anyone feels PDS aged poorly, but PD1 has. I think it has to do specifically with the texture work. FF7 used shaded polygons, while PD1 used textured polygons. And unfortunately the textures are very low rez and the transformation algorithms aren't too good, so everything is extremely jagged and the textures look like ass at times.

I have it. I'm not really into RPG's but a Funcoland employee told me it was great when I was buying a used Saturn so I took him up on it.
I was 3/4 into the first disc when I had to put away my Saturn for a while and only recently got it set up again on my LCD.
now I'm kinda lost in a black sea with towers all around. I can't seem to move much without a battle starting. I'm still kinda lost as to RPG battle systems...I'm slightly discouraged but since I bought it I've learned what a landmark game it is so I want to play it through. I feel like I need to learn something before I can get some fun out of it. the battles seem like a chore cause I don't quite get what I'm doing.
it's really cool though, the environments, the creatures, I love how you can view all the creatures you've had battles with. I would really like to see some of the creatures turned into paper-craft.

Re: Panzer Dragoon Saga
I love the Panzer Dragoon games. PD is one of my favorite series. Saga is great. Zwei is my favorite. I just recently picked up Orta and beat it for the first time, and it is great as well. PD1 is not as great as the others, but still good if you like the other shooters. The sandworm level in PD1 is pretty classic though, and for a Saturn launch title, PD1 looks phenomenal.
I disagree with the contention that the graphics in the Saturn PD games don't hold up today. Sure, if you grew up with the current generation of systems, the graphics might look dated. However, if you are on this forum, you probably appreciate old games, and I think Zwei and Saga are among the best 3D graphics of the 32-bit era. Plus, Zwei has a widescreen mode. I'm not sure whether Saga does.
