It's just not a big deal to me when PCs are doing this as well, but with them you get a real PC.

hope you enjoy your iPad though, don't let me diminish your new toy.
iPad is a real computer. People often think of it still as just a large iPhone but its much more than that. For general computer use (internet, email, some games, music etc., the stuff that 90% of people that own computers use them for), its wonderful. I've already done a presentation using Keynote and typed a paper in Pages, both efficiently and easily. You can't diminish my new toy, I love it, you don't have too, but it's your loss in my eyes :)
How do you get files on and off the device then? There's no usb-mass storage support, so you can't just attach it to any usb equipped laptop or computer, you can't put a memory stick in to work on someone else's documents. From the reviews I've seen of it, Apple want to control everything that goes on the ipad via their itunes gateway to sync files (or I guess you can email documents to and from yourself everytime you want to get stuff on and off the device!). As any sort of general purpose computer that must co-exist in the world of business that's just a complete fail. So it's no good as a netbook then.

As an ebook reader? No chance. High-glare, glossy screen unreadable in sunlight, low battery run time (the Kindle and Sony devices measure run time in multiples of *weeks*, not hours). No comparison to a dedicated ereader.

As a music/media device. Maybe. But it's just not a convenient size. The ipod/iphone works because they're a small neat size that easily fits in your trouser or shirt pocket. Want to take it with you to listen to some music on a journey by car or train? Better make sure you pack that protective case, otherwise when you put it in your backpack/briefcase/suitcase it's gonna get damaged.

Magical device my arse. Steve Jobs has done another magic trick, more like, and pulled the wool over so many peoples eyes.

I'm not saying that a netbook isn't better at other things, but the iPad really excels in usability and it's a joy to use. You're the one trying to set off a fan-war. I like my iPad, sure it isn't as good as a netbook at some things, but it works the way i want it too and I like it, so I don't see why you are trying to make this into a fan-war.

Hey if you are happy with it, great. I just think Apple's marketing hype and high prices are ridiculously reeling in the "gotta have the coolest trend". It is nice, but no keyboard kinda kills typing, as in a regular netbook at a better cost. Too big for the pocket like a phone so why not have a keyboard?

I won an iPad yesterday at an industry event as a raffle item. I'll be honest, when it was announced, I sounded like many of you who have not used one before... "it's just a larger iPod Touch", "the battery doesn't last as long", "It's got a high glare screen", etc., etc.

Well after playing with it for about a day, I have to admit it's a nifty "little" device. It's nice to have handy sitting on the couch where you can pick it up and within seconds be on the internet and accessing apps. As opposed to a laptop which takes 1-2 minutes to get the OS load up, and possibly 1-2 more to get programs loaded.

It should also be said that iPad specific apps have yet to even tap their potential. Before long, there will be hundreds of apps and several games worth getting. Currently there are a handful of apps for the iPad, but most of them are scaled iPhone apps.

All in all, I think the key is to understand that this is not a laptop replacement, nor is it simply an oversized iPod Touch. I'm excited to see where it goes from here.

I don't have an iTouch, iPhone, or iPad. However, if you were to choose between getting the iPad or the iTouch I see absolutely no benefits in getting the iPad. I would just want to carry it around in my pocket and maybe play a game, go online, or listen to music. I can't do that with the iPad, but the iTouch will do it. It's the same device... but bigger.

You might say it's more for a bigger iTouch to use like a computer. But, then I have to ask, why not just get a netbook? It can do more, and doesn't have a smaller identical device.

When I heard about the DSi XL I actually thought about the iPad. However, with the DSi XL it's notable because you don't have to squint your eyes for people that only play at home. However, the iTouch is really something most people will rarely, if ever, use at home, so there's no point in the iPad by that standpoint.

You know, what's funny to me about this statement is that I felt very similar when the iPod Touch came out. If I wanted all the features of the iPhone, I would have just bought an iPhone. I mean, who carries a cell phone and an iPod touch? That's a lot of crap to lug if you consider you'll also take your keys and wallet among other things. An iPod Nano seemed like a much better music player due to it's smaller size.
