Fair enough. Personally I follow the dub, so I only had to make up like a fifth of the series. It does suck to be behind, though.the7k wrote:I'd love to get into One Piece, but it is FUCKING LONG AS ALL HELL!Dylan wrote: Surely you must love One Piece, then.
There is NO WAY I can get into it! 445 Episodes? You have GOT to be shitting me!
That said, I have enjoyed the movies I've seen. You can enjoy them without watching the rest of the series, which is exactly what I want.

Re: Anime Suggestions
Anime is sub-par, but not as bad as the adaptations for other long-running series. Read the manga. Still 3 days out of your life, but a good 3 days.

Yeah, I've been considering that for a while now. I'll probably pick it up this summer, One Piece was never hard to enjoy for me, it's just a matter of time.AmishSamurai wrote:Anime is sub-par, but not as bad as the adaptations for other long-running series. Plenty of solid recommends in this thread, from my scanning of the first 5 pages.
So I'll just leave this OP here...

Thanks for the replies! Already watched Perfect Blue, and I wish there's more like it. Paprika and Paranoia Agent are great, but they're not in the same league. I've heard of Dirty Pair so definitely going to check it out now that you mention it.
I read Boogiepop Phantom is a 2000 production, but I'm not limiting myself to any period so will definitely be looking it up. Slayers looks like fantasy but again if it's quality I wouldn't mind.
So any mecha or super-robot recommendations? Space operas like Captain Harlock?

Only Space Opera in the vein of Harlock I can think of is Space Adventure Cobra, but I'd also try Planetes for a more realistic space series.

Re: Anime Suggestions
From what I've read Dirty Pair is awesome and the original series is finally getting it's own official American release after like 25 years! Apparently the original series is supposed to be the classiest/most plot filled series of the bunch with the rest while still having plot gradually became more fanservicey as time went on.Pulsar_t wrote:I've heard of Dirty Pair so definitely going to check it out now that you mention it.

Re: Anime Suggestions
I just watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann for the 3rd time through, and it's still unbelievably epic. It's without a doubt the best Mecha anime I've ever seen. In fact, I'm going to show you how awesome it is. It was hard to find a quote from the series that didn't include any spoilers, but here's one that should give you a good glimpse of TTGL:Pulsar_t wrote:So any mecha or super-robot recommendations? Now try and tell me you don't want to watch it. Come on, I dare you.We brawlers are sustained by willpower! Even when mocked as reckless and crazy!
If there's a wall in our way then we smash it down! If there isn't a path, then we carve one ourselves!
The magma of our soul burns with a mighty flame! Super Ultra Combining -- Gurren Lagann!!
Just who...!
In the hell...!
DO YOU THINK WE ARE!?
Re: Anime Suggestions
A lot of people hate on Dirty Pair Flash, but I still really enjoyed it. I think it's simply a case of the original setting the bar so high - on it's own, it's still a ton of fun.
There was this retro anime I remember seeing in college that was really good - about a doctor, but not Monster. It had the same look as from the early 90s. I think they had it on Sci-Fi's AniMonday, but I can't find it on this list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sy ... wn_on_Syfy
If I figure it out, I'll let you know. I can't remember much about it because I only saw a very little bit of it, but it looked interesting.

Pulsar_t, I'd recommend checking out Scrapped Princess sometime. I know it's a newer-ish series (2003), but it's pretty high quality. It's a fantasy anime, but it's got a bit of a lost technology thing going on.
