Either way ortodontists give referal fees to dentists for bringing in patients to them. Referals are big business in the medical field.Limewater wrote:That's still weird to me. I have never been to a dentist office that had an in-house orthodontist. These have always been completely separate for me. Every dentist office I've been to has done ONLY regular dentist stuff. The only orthodontist office I've been to did ONLY orthodontics. When I needed to get a gum graft, I went to a separate oral surgeon's office who, as far as I know, did only oral surgery.Ivo wrote:I presume when they mention the dentist they mean just the office, and the specialist works from there.Limewater wrote:Do all of you folks really have your braces handled by your regular dentists? Almost everyone I know who had braces saw a separate Orthodontics specialist for their braces.
Do most of you go to a dentist's office with an in-house orthodontist?

Re: WTF Braces?
I remember when I was in middle school a LOT of kids had braces. It seemed by high school most of my friends were getting them off. As for me, I got braces at 14 and had them off at 18. I had them basically my entire high school life (for senior portraits even!). It was not really my decision though. At least not mostly. My mother and the dentist pressured me like hell when I was 13 that somehow this would be something tremendously important with wonderful effects by the end. In the end I could have said no but I went with it.
As for them being soley for aesthetics that was part of the reason for me, I guess, but not completely. Another big deal was that I have a gap in the front that was to be resized somewhat to fit in a false tooth.
Braces were hell. Before getting them I had never had any ill will toward dentists. Now, I had a dentist and an orthodontist but the orthodontist's office was quite a drive away. At the beginning I had no problem with either man but it started to become too much. Visiting a dentist 2 times a year is fine, but when you add those at least 6 ortho visits a year I felt like I always had people shoving their hands in my mouth. At one point I nearly wanted to bite them because it pissed me off so much.
Aside from that, it was the shittiest thing having the metal sometimes poking out at the end which would irritate/tear at the insides of my mouth. The worst part of my orthodontic hell was when they said I needed a herbst appliance (to fix my jaw alignment - which hadn't even been mentioned initially) along with my braces. Basically I broke down and cried in that office. Seriously LOOK at this thing! http://www.hawksprairieortho.com/images ... Herbst.jpg
I've had them off for a while now and do I feel it was worth it? I guess so. People do compliment me on my teeth (though they're not especially white). The only thing is that now they recommend that you continue to wear retainers every night after you get your braces off. It's kinda like I'll never be completely free from it... because if you don't eventually your teeth will shift back to their original position. At least that's what they say. Lovely.
