upgrading PSP custom firmware from older version?

i have a psp with custom firmware ("hacked", if you will) and i'd like to know if it's possible to upgrade to a newer custom firmware without a pandora battery. if so, then how? i tried a few different methods using youtube videos as a guide, and none of them mentioned a pandora battery... just wondering if it's one of those things that psp people "just know" that you need and isn't even worth mentioning

No, you don't need an pandora battery. Once you've got cfw, you can update to newer versions without any problems. Just download the update files, place the UPDATE folder in the right folder on your MS and off you go!

I did this recently (my thread had the title practically the same as yours!). The way I did it (and I think the best way for you as well?) is to just install Original (Sony) firmware 5.03, then proceed with the ChickHEN method to install 5.50 Gen-D3.

ChickHEN is NOT a way to install CFW. If in CFW, stay in CFW. The ChickHEN method is for those that cannot revert to CFW - that being those with the unmoddable 2000, 3000, and GO.

I think he is implying that there's no point going from a CFW to OFW then hack it to go back to a CFW. Completely pointless. Just run a 5.50m33 (whatever the latest is) CFW update on your PSP and you should be golden. Follow the readme, you will probably need to have the OFW firmware PBP file in a certain location for the custom firmware to install since it borrows files and modifies them.

As I understand:

1. ChickHEN is a exploit / workaround that lets you run some types of code that OFW doesn't, and it works if you have OFW 5.03.

2. In principle ANY CFW will let you install OFW 5.03 so only PSPs with OFW over 5.03 won't let you try ChickHEN.

3. After ChickHEN works, one of the things you can always run is an installer of Custom Firmware.

With 1, 2, and 3 that means you can run the CFW installer on ANY PSP with CFW, and in any PSP with OFW under or equal to 5.03 - this does NOT mean you SHOULD run the installer as...

4. The problem with some 2000s and all 3000s is that you simply can't have CFW *installed* on it due to other security measures. The installer will still run, but then your PSP will get bricked.
Therefore instead of installing CFW, on those PSPs you just run some non-permanent firmware that in turn lets you run other homebrew and so on.

But 4. is not a problem here, as by virtue of the PSP having CFW it has to be a model that allows CFW to be installed. Therefore, without requiring the pandora battery, he can upgrade from CFW to OFW 5.03, run ChickHEN, and run the installer. I've done precisely this with a PSP Slim that had a CFW 3.90 or so.

The problem I faced is that I had a very old CFW, and the installers / updaters will not necessarily work or accommodate all older versions. To be sure I didn't need to locate updaters of Older CFW to old CFW to New CFW, I went straight to OFW 5.03 and then to most recent.

OFW 5.03, ChickHEN and the installer of the most recent CFW are all relatively easy to find and the process isn't difficult. If I was unsure of what I was saying I wouldn't comment, but I've done this less than one month ago.

4 was not a step, but a warning and explanation

Again, the reason why going through 5.03 + ChickHEN may be better is simply that upgrading from Old CFW to new CFW may be less straightforward. This may seem strange, but it is true. Try to find updaters or installers for arbitrarily old CFWs straight to 5.50 Gen-D3 in just a single step. For some CFWs the updater may be there and easy to find. For some it won't be easy to find, and I wager that for some CFWs it doesn't even exist (meaning you would have to locate AND use more than one).

The path through 5.03 is, I believe, always fixed regardless of your old CFW's version - go to 5.03, ChickHEN, go to newest.
