Just set the drives manually. The one on the end should be master and the one in the middle should be slave.

That is untrue. You need compatible cables in order to use cable select. Otherwise, you'll have to set the drives as master and slave. Older 40 conductor IDE cables will not work with cable select. I have tried, and got the same results as vlame (drives showing up as corrupt). Apparently you can cut pin 28 between the two drives and use a 40 conductor cable for cable select, but I've never tried that. The newer 80 conductor cables will work with cable select.

Most newer cables will be color coded with the blue and black connectors, those you know for sure are cable select.

I thought they all cable select on pin 28? Oh well.

Flash is still more expensive than SATA/PATA. Is USB3.0 going to be faster than SATA? Maybe it will make sense to install OS on Flash and have other files on magnetic media.

SSDs need to come down in price eventually. How long do you reckon before 1TB of SSD = $200? Hopefully not too many moons!

well shit they have 4tb for 300, 2 tb for 129 of normal hdds, ssd tech is new.
