Making a Saturn Playstation PAD, help requested

Post by M47R1X »

UPDATE: I will get the adapter in time, but gutting a Saturn Pad and cramming PS1 internals is cheaper right now and I feel I **may** be able to do it.

old post:

Hello all! I'm in the mood to hack apart an old PS2 (or PS1) pad to make a Saturn adapter for the Playstation. The Saturn model 2 pad is hailed by many as the best sh'mup pad of all time and using it on the Playstation would kick ass (PS2 Saturn Pads are too hard to come by...).

I plan to hack apart a Saturn extension cable and an old Playstation controller. I figure if I match up the leads, I should be able to do it without destroying a perfectly good Saturn controller. I don't really care for analog control (the 3D pad is.... decent... but I think the dual shock is better for 3D), really just making this for MvC and a few others. I plan to keep the select button on the Playstation pad I will be hacking apart, just in case, but all other buttons will be sole property of the Saturn Pad.

Here is the mapping I'm going for:

Playstation --- Saturn
X--------A
O--------B
R1-------C
[_] --------X
^--------Y
L1--------Z
L2-------- L
R2-------- R
Start------Start
D-Pad------- D-Pad
Select-------(nothing)

So, you know, pretty much just like the PS2 Saturn Pad, only with the Select button left on the "adapter." Here is an AWESOME Paint mock-up of what I'm talking about:

Now I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought of this, so surely someone has done a pin-out. It would save me a boatload of time. I will take the wires from the extension cable and solder them to contacts on the hacked-apart Playstation controller, hopefully successfully making an adapter, and of course leaving the select button in place on the adapter, rather than ousting it entirely.

Anyone got anything?

I don't think that will work. Dealing with potentiometers on the PS1/PS2, different resistance readings and each button has to be mapped separate of the limited controller console connector plug pins. You could solder in a gutted PS1 controller circuit board placed inside the Saturn controller, match the buttons up tto the PS1 circuit board pads.

There are various PS1 to different console adaptors. Maybe there is a Saturn to PS1 adaptor out there?

Well, crap, that sucks. There was a way I knew of to daisychain a Saturn to XBox and an XBox to PS2 adapter together, but they seem to be sold out everywhere. I have a thread for it in Buy/Sell/Trade.

Mojochan has a fantastic saturn -> ps2 adapter out, as well as snes -> ps2. Have you checked that out?

I apologize in advance if you wanted to do this for educational reasons and not just to get a good converter =/

edit: All his work on this stuff is open source he says, if you want to take a peek at his designs or whatever. I can't find any of that documentation on his site though =/

edit2: your other option is to get rid of the original saturn cord, and wire the pcb to a db15 connector which you can hook up to a controller pcb in a breakout box of your choice (one or two have done this for the xbox 360 on SRK)

I saw the other post, might work, two adaptors though couldn't be positive. Might put too much strain on power going thru PS2 controller port.

There are a ton of PS1-PS2 various sticks out there. Maybe something that is already playstion compatible might work.

Even an old genesis stick can be gutted with a PS1 circuit board.

Meh, partly educational, just to see if I could. I graduated with a Biochem degree and know only somewhat about this stuff. But that website...

HAWT DAMN!!!! Just what I was looking for! Doing all of this on an iPod touch right now, does he ship to the States?

Yeah. You might want to double check with him on his thread on SRK, hes releasing a compatibility update revision soonish - the original is still pretty awesome however. its 4 pounds shipping overseas. http://www.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=220530

If you buy it please post your results, for other owners who are in need of this hard to find adaptor. Good luck.

I could gut a Saturn controller, snatch a PS one pad and mosh the two together, PSone Controller internals in the Saturn controller.

How hard it that, per se? I found a Saturn pad all by it's lonesome at Vintage Stock today for $5, and if I remember right they have ASCII grip one-handed controllers for $5 as well. Would that be small enough or would I need to cram an original SONY digital PS1 controller in (next smallest I can think of)? Its pretty much soldering the contacts of the Saturn buttons to the PCB of the PS1 pad, right? I think I can do that with not TOO much difficulty (my soldering skills are novice/intermediate, ie: not that great, but I can handle most things). Thanks for everyone helping me with this, BTW.
