final fight cd wrote:that sucks. i have a few friends who have gone through 3 or so. xbox keeps sending them new/fixed 360s and they just keep shitting the bed.

the funny thing is, a buddy of mine has a launch 360, plays it EVERYDAY, and still has yet to have any problems with it.
My friend gave me his old RRoD'd launch 360, which he said lasted him 3 years of strenuous play in a poorly-ventilated room. It's absolutely ridiculous how much it costs to repair a 360. I haven't been able to find a place that will repair it for under $100. I guess it's just the demand for the service.

Sigh... I seriously hope that the new 360 motherboard will combat these problems. I would definitely buy one if it did.

The Jaspers are only marginally better than their predecessors. The only fact in all of this is that your console is destined to expire. A radical rethinking of the whole motherboard design is needed and they might just pull it off. The RRoD should have been the worst PR disaster in digital entertainment history but somehow we put up with it. Why? Because it's not as critical as a car fatally misbehaving or a toy painted with lead. Should we be feeling some sort of collective guilt? Definitely.

Depending on the power supply, chances are you had a Falcon which is still prone to failure due to the 90nm GPU. If your power supply is rated 175w then it's definitely a Falcon. I'm not saying the Jaspers are RRoD-proof, they definitely stand a much better chance of avoiding it, it's too early to tell if it's an issue with these models just yet.

It seems to be complete pot-luck with RRoD, take for example my xbox 360, that lasted over 4 years (it was a launch unit Premium with the 20GB hard drive) before it RRoD, I've fixed it since then though, if you want to know visit here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 26&t=20544 I used an amalgamation of all the known temp-fixes for the system, however it will never fix it 100% unless you use a high quality leaded solder, sadly the equipment to rework a BGA is prohibitively expensive for just one machine. Anybody claiming to fix xbox 360's are lying unless they have an infrared BGA workstation. All they will do to your 360 is the x-clamp fix, which is very temporary and is just as prone to breaking since the fault lies in the cheap crappy solder they're forced to use on the components on the motherboard (thanks RoHS!!).

You're correct, there's no 'real' fix. You might want to either try the tricks Niode mentioned, get a 360 Arcade as replacement (since you can salvage your HDD) or wait for the newest mobo revision.

I take it the cover of the Elite can be installed on the Arcade? Does it break Microsoft's warranty?

If the problem is overheating, I don't see why someone could make a replacement casing with more vents or something, or put the damn thing next to an air conditioner.

The problem isn't just overheating. The damage is accumulative and the consoles are doomed to expire one way or another. The Digital Foundry explains the rationale behind this presumption.

That was also my first thought. If the system is a year old, Jaspers were pretty new to the market and getting an Elite was no way to guarantee one. If it's, say, a year and a half old, I'm not even sure if Jaspers were being manufactured yet.

And indeed, no system is perfect to begin with. Discs stopped loading on my PS3 some time ago, while my 360 is still kicking. Even my Wii makes a disconcerting buzzing noise when discs are spinning. No system is infallible - and the more complicated they get, the more that becomes apparent.

I own pretty much all of the major consoles released since the Famicom but I am unable to buy the 360 because of the RROD bullshit. I mean, what's the point of buying something if it won't last more than a few years at best? However, maybe it's good that I don't buy a 360 considering most games on it you don't really own anyway. Between download only games and partial download games (disc based games with DLC), it's just a big pile of temporary shit. Either your system breaks or the games are taken off the server. Give it 10 years and XBOX 360 won't exist in any form. I will take the moral high road and choose not to participate, thank you.

On a side note, I just played some Puyo Puyo on the Mega Drive yesterday. 20 years old and it still works.

It's funny how people put up with consoles failing ALMOST out of the box, yet people flip shit when sony removes a feature.
Not trying to start any fights, but I would rather lose a feature than send my PS3 in every 3 months or more to get a replacement.
I might buy a 360 if I get one for the right price.
On a side note. I turned on my Dreamcast today. I still works 10 years later.
