Ok, I'll take your word for it in SS2, I never finished that. From what I played it seemed a better game. Certainly more scary and atmospheric.

I didn't think the wrench thing was fun at all. Nothing can kill you. 300 slicers in a row will all die miserable deaths. I watched my friend wrench the final boss with no problem in horror.

Actually, even playing through as I did - with a mix of weapons and plasmids - isn't that great. Even though the graphics are amazing, the environments are very 'samey'. Each area looks different, but you'll pretty much find the usual: a few slicers, maybe a big daddy, some weapons, some circus of value, maybe a safe etc etc. Its really all the same area repeated. The saving grace is the story, which has some really cool moments (excluding the awful ending)

The worst disappointment is the balance of the game. Its broken. I won't say exactly how, but its possible to play through the entire game killing virtually everyone with your wrench. This with no plasmid purchases either. Thats just terrible playtesting for a game this big.
System Shock 2 was the exact same, but from what I hear Bioshock isn't as scarce for ammo as SS2 is. Personally, I think being able to play through wrenching everything to death is fun. I love brutal melee kills.

Ugh confirmed. I got bored with this game, it seems. I just dont care anymore. Everything you said above has become true. Unfortunately not even the story interests me because I have no fucking idea whats going on anymore. Everytime I play a tape recording, some god damn mob comes out of nowhere to fight me, and I cant hear what the recording is saying at that point. I dont bother to repeat it. Bad enemy placement.

Talking about somewhat recent games, I think both Company of Heroes and Oblivion came with no protection system whatsoever and they were still best-sellers. Why? Because they're great, and as stupid as most gamers are, they still recognise that and feel that such a good game really deserves to be bought.
Oblivion has protection. Company of Heroes does not, which really surprised me. Relic deserves props for this, and I would have bought the game if I liked the RTS genre.
Guess what? The newest patch for COH, which makes it compatible with the newly released expansion, now integrates securom. If you run the game with internet connected, it will force you to make an online account with a valid key, which if you do so, will deactivate the securom cd check. I've been really trying to get decent at the game to warrant the purchase. I'm 8 missions into the campaign, but I still suck so bad.

I assume if you just have the expansion itself, it has the same protections.

Just out of curiosity, what does Securerom, et al do if you don't have an internet connection, or, at least, deny access to the sites it wants to hit? I'd imagine it wants to muckabout with your winders firewall crap, but perhaps blocked on your router/firewall?

Best bet would be to block the Relic IP with your HOSTS file, and like I said, if you do that, or you disable your ethernet, it then simply wants the cd in the drive. It doesn't do a thurough disc check though, because my disc has the 1.71 patch file inserted in it, so it's not an authentic disc, in terms of file layout or whatever it checks for.

Funny, thats one of the things I do like - that you are kept 'in-game' when listening to the tapes. Some games would cut out to a cutscene where you are invulnerable, but in Bioshock you can be killed at any time. My best memory of the game is when I picked up a Sander Cohen tape - and he starts going nuts reading insane poetry, and then screaming he 'can't remove the rabbit ears!!' or something - and got attacked by a massive mob of slicers at the same time. It was intense.

Still, the game is painfully overhyped. I would say by and large its just worth a rental.

And here's the entries you should add to your HOSTS and restart Windows:

127.0.0.1 cohlive.quazal.net
127.0.0.1 cohlive-1.quazal.net

Again, I'd buy this game if it would convince me it's a worthy investment. Just tried mission 8 again and my idiot infantry wouldnt cross the bridge after I fixed it, and so I lost the capture point and failed. 25 min wasted again. God damn bugs.
