Anyone else think 3D technology will fall on its face?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I do not know where you looked at TVs but plasma sets are much cheaper than LCD sets.

Plus they are prone to burn-in.
I don't know where you looked at TVs but Plasma screens haven't suffered from burn-in for about 5 years now. I am yet to have any burn in and I do a lot of gaming (static HUDs/menus) on my Viera.

Plasmas are superior to LCD in every single way. If Plasmas are cheaper than LCDs then you are a complete idiot for buying an LCD because it's more expensive.

STRONG OPINION!

I get what you are saying, but in the advertising world, LCD all the way. It cuts costs, just as effective as a plasma tuber.

That is kind of like saying LCD's are prone to ghosting, it has not happened since the early days.

No need to take it so personally. I mean its not like you invented plasma technology or anything.

Ok, LCDs consume less power, but image quality plasmas are leagues ahead. Deeper blacks and massive contrast ratios, faster/clearer images due to the technology (image is processed as fast as the image processor runs). To get LCDs to respond faster manufacturers have to overdrive the pixels which causes lower image quality due to lack of precision.

@octopod, I'm saying that only an idiot would buy something more expensive for no other reason than 'it more expensiver, it gots to be betterer!1'

I see. I misunderstood, I am pretty bad at that. That's not what I meant when I said that either though. I was just responding to the fact that you stated that people who preferred LCD's were just being cheap asses. After reading Plasma v. LCD articles on the net I decided I liked LCD better is all. Maybe if I had bought a much larger set I would have gone plasma but I bought a 40" Samsung. Hell if I had the money I would have had an awesome Samsung LED but those are like twice what I paid for an LCD.

LED is still LCD technology, and most of the mid range priced sets are just edge-LED which, whilst being a massive improvement over normal diffuse backlit LCD isn't the same as the more expensive RGB LED TV which are essentially the same principle as Plasma technology. The 'plasma' in plasma TVs excites phosphors to emit light, so blacks are simple 'off' there's no light that's why blacks are black and whites are white on plasma displays. The same principle applies to RGB LED TVs there's simply millions of RGB LEDs and blacks are simply not emitting light giving a superior picture quality.

If you know anybody with a plasma TV next time you are at their house ask them to turn the lights off and switch to a blank channel (if it defaults to black) and you will notice that the plasma will not light the room up, there is simply no light being emitted. Compare that to an LCD TV and if you do the same even though it's 'black' it will still emit light into the room due to the backlight being on all the time, it never switches off until the set is turned off.

This leads to a curious fact about plasma TVs due to the way the technology works, power consumption varies depending on what is being displayed on the TV. Watching something fairly dark or monochromatic like the Matrix will consume less power than watching something very vibrant and bright like The Fifth Element. Fascinating.

Especially 4:3 HD CRTs, not that many produced compared to Wide Screen LCDs and Plasmas. Just gonna be harder to come by few years from now, even as a quality second hand. For my older Retros still the best video. Hate Dot Crawl of LCD when I tested a PS2 game on it.
