Wahoo! Fixed it!
My flux finally came after Jeffro's recommendation in the chat.
I first lapped the heatsinks, and cleaned the cpu/gpus to a mirror finish. I borrowed my friend's infrared heat gun, flooded the area with flux and heated the shit out of it, starting in the edges of the motherboard and slowly bringing the overall temperature of the system up for about 20 minutes then concentrated on the GPU for several minutes whilst directing the heat around the rest of the motherboard every 30 seconds or so, this avoids warping of the motherboard as the centre of the motherboard is at an extremely high temperature. I then started gradually cooling the motherboard down. I then let the motherboard rest for 25 minutes or so until it was cool enough to touch again. Cleaned any of the excess flux from the board and then put some Arctic Silver 5 compound onto the CPU and GPU, spread the compound evenly with an old HMV Games Rewards card (people in the UK will know why I used it!) and then fixed my heatsinks back onto the motherboard using the same screws, nylon and metal sprung washers found in those x-clamp fix packages. Put the thing back together and it works perfectly. It even seems to run quieter too (when it's not using the disc drive, of course!)
So yeah, really happy now, I've still got an Xbox 360 Elite coming, but at least now it means that I can fuck around with flashing the firmware on the drive and look at some way of getting homebrew running on it and then have my Xbox 360 Elite with my Xbox Live Gold account for legit uses.
