genmobile or nomad whats better?
genmobile or nomad whats better?
I am interested in picking up a portable genesis. I did buy a few games for the gba some nes ports and snes ports but I'm done with nintendo for now. I love my genesis/cd/32x and I want to pick up a portable but which one. I do have alot of the 20 built in games for the genmobile, but i don't know how good the system is. Another thing is does that system play every genny game out there or do some games not play like castlevania 3 for the fc twin. Now I now about the nomad and how it sucks up batteries but i have rechargeable batteries and a charger for the batteries so there is no problem. Please give me the input and guide me to which one I should choose thanks
Re: genmobile or nomad whats better?
Rechargeable batteries have even less run time then a regular alkaline battery. Both are great collectable portables, maybe "window" shop the games first see which ones hook you in. There is also the more expensive Turbo GraFX Express or you could go with a Gamepark or Dingo.
My portable gaming personal preference is the Cell Phone, I have a Samsung Impression. A non-Smart phone with low monthly charge and its always conveniently with me full of games and reference PDF files.
Tons of Cell Games out there including Loco Roco, see my signature link.

Re: genmobile or nomad whats better?
I am actually really, really disappointed in the Gen Mobile.
The screen is ugly and very small. It lacks strong color contrast and appears to be lower resolution than the games it was intended to display. The sound emulation is poor, making the familiar chiptunes sound like ear rape.
I had a Nomad for a while. It was very novel and nostalgic if you're into old stuff. The screen was vibrant, albeit a little blurry when stuff moved around on it. The sound was obnoxiously LOUD, just like a good ol' portable from the early nineties. Disadvantage was that its bulkiness... it's kind of an "un-portable."
Personally, I'd say not to bother with either. Get a modded PSP instead. I have one and it is tight. The screen's massive, doesn't blur when stuff moves, has gorgeous color contrast. You can save game states and pause at any time. You don't have to carry clunky cartridges around. Really... if you're in it to play Genny games on the go and not to collect, there's no excuse to take any other route.
But, if you're in it to collect, get a Nomad. The Gen Mobile sucks.

My retro-portable of choice is the NeoGeo Pocket Color.
Older. Not wiser.

Re: genmobile or nomad whats better?
I was going to get a genmobile/retrogen but found that two of the games that I own and wanted to play on it (Bloodlines and PS4) would not work.
I ended up getting a NOMAD. While it is quite large, it is what it is - you wont be able to fit it in your pocket but you won't notice it's size when playing it.
As for the batteries in regards to a NOMAD, I had the same question. I was worried about battery life and created a thread about it here.
I took Anapan's advice and bought the batteries he suggested and the charger I linked to in that post. I have been averaging 8 hours per charge (don't quite know because I only play for about 1 hour a sitting).
So take it for what it's worth, but I think the NOMAD is the better of the two you were originally asking about.

Seriously, Buy an old PSP 1000 (I see em on craigslist/ebay for less than $75 sometimes) and either find someone to mod it or research how to do it yourself. You absolutely will not be disappointed. On the same machine I can play Sonic 3, Super Metroid and DonPachi. Beauty.
Though, I do understand wanting a good cartridge based retro handheld. There is definitely something about seeing that physical cartridge in your system that makes you feel legit. But until a company can get our retro portables right (I'm talking to you Yobo) then I'd say emulate away my friend.

The PSP offers the best emulation next to the Nomad though. Both the RetroGen and GenMobile have been labeled as crap.
