over the last few months, I've noticed that rare ps2 games are quickly losing their value. I'm not sure if it's just a market trend, but I'm hoping it is (I've got quite a few rare games that I was hoping to make a profit on)
thoughts?
also, I figured this could double as an update to the old "rare ps2 game list", since there seems to be some more recent ones (megaman X collection anyone?)
ps2 games decreasing in value
Re: ps2 games decreasing in value
I actually think they are on the rise for 'real' games, the price of FFX, God of War and other high profile titles seem to be going up in price rather than down.

Re: ps2 games decreasing in value
All I know is that the price of Tales games are skyrocketing. Tales of the Abyss was around $30 before, now I see it for $55! Same with Vesperia on the 360.
Re: ps2 games decreasing in value
They're down right now because it's a last-gen console. PS1 games went way down in price before eventually skyrocketing on many games. Same thing is happening here, now is simply the time to buy.
Re: ps2 games decreasing in value
I don't really care what the value of my games is since I'm never going to sell them. However, I'm making sure I get all the valuable (or soon to be valuable) titles now rather than later because I'd hate to want to play a game and have to pay over the odds to get it.

Similar to the stock market, there is an increased popularity of those franchises currently, so prices can be expected to that wave.

Yep. Just like NES in the 90s. They were junk when the tech was last-gen. Now they're "vintage."

it would be a good idea. You never really know what is going to go up in value. Plus, i don't think ps2 games are ever going to get lower than where they are now, and still be a good game. Fatal frame stuff might not get lower than where it is. There will probably be a glut of like... barbie games or some such nonsense at gamestop for a buck in a couple years, but you wont' find any quality in that pile. I'm picking up a lot of games i've had my eye on (dot hack series and a lot of racket's hidden gems) but just couldn't justify paying for at the time of release. Games like Cold fear look fun, and costs like 3 dollars. Who doesn't have 3 dollars!? Hidden gems. Where it is at.
My rule when seeing ps2 games is this: If it is under 20 i consider it. Under 10 and unless i hear mixed reviews, i pick it up. Under 5 and if it looks interesting at all, I'll get it.
The crux of all this are games that i would really like that i don't end up getting becuase they are just over 20. Games like ratchet and clank size matters or clank secret agent.
Re: ps2 games decreasing in value
It has felt weird to buy PS2 games for the past year or two. There are all of these games that I love whole-heartedly that I see going for the price of a cup of coffee. In some cases, these games cost millions to make, provided hours of entertainment, and were critically praised to heaven... now they sit crooked on a shelf with an ugly yellow sticker placed over the top of the last 3 stickers that were on it. I feel bad for the games because they deserve better.
At the same time, I'm creating an insane stockpile of PS2 and GameCube games without even breaking a financial sweat. These games have lost their perceived value in the eye of the general populace right now because they are yesterday's news. But yesterday's news becomes tomorrow's history and then it's suddenly important again. If you are a collector, now is the time to strike. These things go in cycles and it will only take a few things for the old PS2, Xbox, or GameCube titles that are cheap now to suddenly become perceived as valuable again and rocket in price.
With the internet a mainstream thing now, everyone knows everything. Games that we all mostly slept on at release like Psychonauts, ICO, or Beyond Good & Evil have become the stuff of legend and jumped up in reputation and, consequently, price. As time goes by, people will keep hearing about these kinds of games through word of mouth, but the copies will be harder and harder to find. It's possible that the digital revolution could make collecting hard copies obsolete, but I think there is always a benefit to the physical media that keeps it marketable. We'll probably see a few digital services fail within the next decade and that will make people more nervous about owning things without keeping a hard copy and these old disc based games will suddenly seem more appealing then downloading something off PSN or whatever else.
