That's the problem. There are no benefits. All games work on 4.1, 4.2 is completely useless. It's purely a security update to delete HBC, that's it. So if you're on 4.1 you don't want to upgrade to 4.2 and have to do your softmod all over again. It's a complete waste of time.gtmtnbiker wrote:Exactly what is the issue with being on the latest version which is 4.2? Are there any specific compatibility issues? Re: Should I Update wii to 4.2?
The OP is on 3.3 so he might as well just go to the latest version. If he was already on 4.1, then yes, I do agree that there's no real benefit other than the Wii shop channel. It's possible that some of the newer games will require the 4.2 update.Niode wrote: That's the problem. There are no benefits. All games work on 4.1, 4.2 is completely useless. How about toss that firmware headache out the window and go back to the Cube.
Thats how I feel about current Gen sneaky hostage tactics.

If I recall right wasn't the solution to get the latest HBC, which renames a file and causes 4.2 to not delete it?Niode wrote:That's the problem. There are no benefits. I think Niode's point is, why upgrade to 4.2 when it does utterly nothing when you can upgrade to 4.1, your not 'future-proofing' yourself by upgrading to 4.2, its a useless upgrade.
Upgrade to 4.1, upgrade beyond it at a later date when its worth doing so.
I have 4.2 installed on mine, it works, It is only that high because my GF installed a update off a disc without me about, I am not saying 4.2 doesnt work, but it has a secuirty measures in place that 4.1 doesnt, so why in the world bother with it, if 4.1 is available.

Re: Should I Update wii to 4.2?
Well yeah, that's my point. It's completely flummoxed by the latest HBC update and the update does absolutely nothing other than risking your Wii getting bricked in that case. Until 4.3 comes out and possibly adds something to the system then I'd hold off and just go to 4.1.MrPopo wrote:If I recall right wasn't the solution to get the latest HBC, which renames a file and causes 4.2 to not delete it?Niode wrote:That's the problem. Yeah, if you first update your HBC, BootMii, etc, then updating to 4.2 should be just fine. And I actually do buy some legit games off of the Wii Shop Channel, thank you very much. Just because someone has the HBC doesn't mean that they've gone as far as to hack their IOS, or that they don't try to support game developers.Niode wrote:Well yeah, that's my point. Re: Should I Update wii to 4.2?
That's some big accusations to throw around. "don't support game developers". I don't buy games from Shop Channel because Nintendo will not support your purchases should your Wii break. If your Wii breaks you're up shit creak. You have to go begging to Nintendo to get games that you have purchased onto a different console. I absolutely WILL NOT support a system like that.LK4O4 wrote:Yeah, if you first update your HBC, BootMii, etc, then updating to 4.2 should be just fine. Also, you don't need 4.2 to access the shop channel you can do that from 4.1 with a dns redirect.

Re: Should I Update wii to 4.2?
Sorry dude, I had some other posts open in another tab and I thought I had read someone say something like "why would would want to go to the wii shop if your wii is hacked" or whatnot. But I don't see it now, so I'm assuming I saw someone else say that in another thread. Nothing personal.Niode wrote:That's some big accusations to throw around. "don't support game developers". Re: Should I Update wii to 4.2?
You can always grab the latest official IOSs with NUS downloader. It'll fetch the data from Nintendo's servers and pack it into a .wad for you. No need to download .wad's from some shady website.
The 4.2 update will remove bootmii because it updates boot2. So if you do upgrade to 4.2 make sure the run the hackmii installer afterwards.
BTW you don't have to do a dns redirect or resort to any other such trickery to get into the shop channel on older firmware. You can download the latest version of the shop channel with NUS downloader and install it with a wad manager. After that it will work normally just make sure you also install the IOS the shop channel needs or it will black screen upon start up.
