Having problems with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Post by Kenshiro28 »

So I installed the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. about a month or so ago and was really digging it but I took a bit of a long-term break from it. Recently started continuing my game again but it keeps crashing. This seems to be the description of what's what.

A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

Are you using the latest version of the game? I know the last patch was 1.06 or something like that. That is what I have been using and no crashes.

Yes, I believe so. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the game. It also seems to be with just one save file so far but I'm wondering what could've happened to begin with. It worked fine until I started it up again today so I'm worried about any other possible computer issues that could arise.

Does it crash during gameplay or when you try to start the game? Which part of the game are you in?
I love the STALKER games but they seem to have been programmed by drunk armadillos.

Over in...crap, whatchamacallit...in Garbage. I've run around from the start to Agroprom Underground before with no problems before but I started another new game after realizing I missed a bunch of stuff the first time through and THAT was working just fine 'til today. It crashes a couple minutes after loading up the save, even when i save elsewhere or enter another area or whatever. I started ANOTHER save file since the crashing and that hasn't blown up on me so far but I'd hate for this to start happening again. I'd like to finish this game someday.

I've had the exact same problem once during the 3 times I completed STALKER. So it's not too common. I used an earlier save and things were fine. It seems to be a totally random bug. A worse variant is when a corrupted save won't even let you boot up the game. In that case you have to erase all save files manually which is a pain in the neck. That happened to me twice.
On my PC I have to switch off all dynamic lighting option in order to have some stability in the STALKER games and even then they crash randomly.
As I said, great games but buggy like hell.

You could try the unofficial patches and see if that fixes your issue, you'll most likely have to restart though since the saves aren't cross-patch compatible. Could you have updated Stalker since starting that particular save? That would explain it crashing on startup. I assume that your save contains a certain event or something that the game is not expecting. Have you got a save just before that point?

Nah, it's pretty much the final set of patches for the vanilla game and I hadn't touched/messed with it since then. There were some weird bugs going on though (at one point, a bunch of bandits just lined up in a straight line, stopped moving, and continued yelling at....boars I think) so I guess it could've just been a whole chuck of random crap that just happened to pop up all at once.

Lucky me. But yeah, since starting a new game, it seems fine now (well, as fine as vanilla S.T.A.L.K.E.R. can be) so I'll be making more back-up saves now to avoid bull-malarky.

Why don't you try Oblivion Lost? It has much more bug fixes than even the latest official patch. Plus it fixes a lot of the game that is just either stupid or simply broken. I've played through both and I much prefer OL.
