Like most Christian Holidays, it was taken from Pagan/Heathen rituals and adapted to celebrate Jesus.

Ostara, named after the German goddess, is the celebration of the spring equinox. It is a fertility festival, which can still be seen in today's Easter celebrations use of rabbits and eggs motifs. I am sure that all pagan religions celebrated the coming of spring though.

This stuff drives me nuts around December. People getting offended by a holiday that originally had nothing to do with the people who currently celebrate it, and half of those people celebrating are completely unaware of those origins.

Back to the topic, funny story, the youngest people in my family are all in our twenties at this point, so even though my wife and I will probably be having kids soon, until then there aren't and haven't been any brats around since we were all kids. Of course, that also means there hasn't been an easter egg hunt in over ten years.

Today, when the whole family got together, some of the old folks decided it'd be funny to make me and my cousins find plastic eggs hidden around the house. They're reliving our childhood! How about that?

But, we got candy out of it, plus we got them back by secretly hiding the eggs around the house again before we left. Have fun! Ha!

What's better is that they forgot where they hid some of the eggs originally, so there's at least one egg floating around that house with unclaimed candy inside. I have a feeling it'll be years before its discovered again.

Sorry again, I know that's kind of a weird anecdote, but I thought it was worth mentioning considering the topic.
