Anyone else think 3D technology will fall on its face?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Having games that are 3d is just a gimmick, unless it being 3d has some sort of interactive effect with you as a user. Currently, 3d just means that stuff pops out at you which gives you a headache and doesn't really change how the game works. It's a purely visual thing. With the headtracking, you get to see the depth, and your movements effect the perspective on screen, so there is a relationship between your actions and the 3d effect.
Yeah, but that kind of 3D only works for games. What about movies? Don't you wanna watch a horror movie and see a severed head thrown at the screen and watch and listen to all the people in the audience screaming and having freakouts? Or an action movie and watching people ducking when a tire falls off the car in a high-speed chase and tumbles towards the audience? And can you imagine porn with 3D?

I have no experience with 3D in theatres (aside from Disney's PhilharMagic), but I agree.

Though I wish that some older films would be cool if they rereleased them in 3D.

Agreed.

Blu-Ray DVD's and HD TV were also once considered a "fad". Then again, so were HD dvds.

I'm not so sure that 3D is once again a fad. It's not on just one format. 3D movies, 3D televisions, 3D television stations, 3D hand held consoles.

I doubt so many big name companies including, but not limited to, Samsung, Sony, Disney, Nintendo, ESPN would put so much money into R&D of 3D technology if they didn't think it could last.

Just another thing we'll have to wait out to see if consumers will latch on to it.

Well I don't think I will ever jump on this fad really. The developers of such games will focus too much on the new tech when everything jumps out at you every ten seconds. And then it'll take a solid three years before better quality games come out and by then I will lose interest if I did care about it to jump in from the get-go.

About it being a fad? They, and when I mean they I mean everyone but Nintendo, thought the motion control crap was going to be a fad and now the other two schmuck companies of the industry jumped on board.

I wasn't actually thinking about movies. I'm completely indifferent to them at the moment. I can't appreciate 3d movies because they make me nauseous so untill the technology works without me having to wear the ill fitting headache-inducing glasses, I don't support it.

Even if 3D doesn't catch on at first (which I don't think it will), it will definitely catch on later.

The only reason I feel it won't catch on now is because current consoles have not been made with 3D displays in mind. Once the next generation comes about, you can bet your sweet ass they'll be made for it. It still won't catch on immediately, but as the TVs that support/enhance 3D come down in price, it's use will rise - until we get to the point we're at right now, where HDTVs are pretty much the norm for all but the most frugal of folks.

According to the Discovery Channel, it's impossible for humans to see anything in 3D, glasses or not.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. Don't shoot the messenger.

I haven't seen any 3D movies at the theater yet, nor have I played any games in 3D, but I did download Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao on XBLA and sent away for the two pairs of free 3D glasses for them.

Apparently the game can be played in 3D on TVs that allow it, and also has a setting that will allow you to just use normal red/blue 3D glasses. I played the game up to the 3rd or 4th level (it was hard as hell BTW), but kind of stopped right around the time that the glasses arrived in the mail. I'll play it in 3D tomorrow to get some better impressions.

As far as the 3D trend goes, I do think its interesting that people are trying something new, but stuff like the price increase at movie theaters is just ridiculous IMO.

3D + FPS = obvious sales ploy, but potentially awesome.

Someone tell Gates to get on this, stat.

Oh, and I want a percentage of sales residuals.

3D technology is very hit or miss for me. It works for some movies and not others. For gaming, I'm not that interested so far after demos at PAX last year and other games I have tried at other events.

I think that 3D tech as we know it today will be a fad but it will be replaced someday something a lot more immersive than what we think of today as "3D." It's only a matter of time before what we saw on The Lawnmower Man is something closer to reality. Today's 3D is just the first step.
