My Gamecube Dreamcast case mod

Post by Whatever »

I was bored so I put a gamecube inside a dreamcast case. I used a first gen gamecube because when I first looked at the project the av connector lined up pretty well with the dreamcast hole on the back of case. If I did it over again (which I may haha) I would use a second gen gamecube with just the analog av output. (you would have to desolder the av connector (which is a little more work) but you would eliminate the voltage regulator board. I also modified the case to fit full size dvd's. (the cube is not modded atm, but I will probably order a hard chip this week to take advantage of the case.) Memory card is located on the back were the Dreamcast a/c power used to be plugged in. Here is some pics of it if your curious how it fits. The biggest hurdle is getting the height of the components right. It is a really tight fit and takes some messing around to get good clearance. I'm pretty happy with right now but its far from perfect.

The power switch mounted and resting plate bracket for the memory card connector.

Wow that's... actually pretty good! Interesting and very well done mod. Video to follow?

BTW, those images are too big - you gotta downsize them... not 720p friendly.

Very slick! Liked the way you made that Cube drive have a very clean fit when you open the DC door.

Thanks for resize of pics, easier to see now.

The full size discs run smooth?

Doesn't really matter since the Gamecube can only read up to the 1.4GB point anyway. As far as the Gamecube is concerned the disc is the same size as an original. It won't work until he hard mods it though.

I'd advise against the Viper GC. It's clunky and requires a parallel port to be installed in the system otherwise you can't flash the firmware to the chip. My Viper GC just died and took the entire system with it :(. I want to get another chip but it'd very hard to find one. Might just have to stick with the Wii for GC backups...

Was thinking with SDLoad/SDBoot to run the cheaper full size DVD-Rs.

Actually it can read up to somewhere around 3GB. I've seen threads where people determined the upper limit for those DVDs that have multiple GC games on it.

EDIT: Here's one thread: http://www.maxconsole.net/showthread.ph ... -0.5/page2
MaxConsole wrote: The multi-game ISO makers for GameCube are commonly GCMUtility and Viper's Multi-Game Maker, of which I'd recommend GCMUtility.. but if I remember correctly, only one of them let you make multi-boot ISOs bigger than 1.35GB to fit the 3GB size that a GameCube CAN read with full size DVDs and a case mod..

You can get the Viper GC extreme which has the mini-USB port. Still, I recommend getting a cheap Xeno GC chip.

Yeah, I have a Xeno GC chip. Works great. I usually go for hardmods over softmods.

Isn't the only point on using full size DVDs is just so you don't have to buy the uncommon mini DVDs? (aside from hacks, apparently).

Very nice mod! If my Dreamcast ever dies, THIS is what I'm doing with it!

Are you planning on painting/dying the console? Maybe adding some Nintendo and/or Gamecube logos? That's what I'd do.
