I used Avast for a while, but it was very system resource-intensive, and took ages to do a scan. But it was quite secure. I was going to try AVG, but it crashes my OS whenever I start up. I have yet to find a good virus program that works on my computer.

Pro tip for XP users: First off, put XP (or any OS for that matter) on a separate partition from the rest of your files. In other words, have only the OS on a one partition (or hard drive) and the rest of your junk on another partition (or hard drive). This way, if the OS gets screwed up, either by virus or whatever, it wont be too much of a headache to reinstall it. At least, you wont have to worry about backing up all your stuff.

Second, and this is the more important part, don't make just one account when you're using XP. When you do a fresh install, make an account called "Admin" and update and install all your programs. Create a second account that you'll be using 99% of the time that doesn't have administration rights (make it a 'power user' or whatever they call it). This way, when you're using your power user account, if you get a virus it wont be able to infect the entire computer because it wont have the privileges. In the event of a virus, delete the account and recreate it. All you'll be using is your settings (wallpaper, screen saver, etc) since your files are kept on a separate partition or drive (as stated above). Additionally, if a virus manages to infect the entire computer, you can easily reinstall the OS as mentioned above.
