Various oXbox Game Trouble

Post by lisalover1 »

I've been having quite a bit of trouble running certain Xbox games lately.

For starters, I've been trying to get Guilty Gear X2 working for ages. I've tried my real game disc, a backup disc, and a Hard Drive rip, but all have the exact same error. When I start the game, the publisher's [Sammy's] animation stutters quite a bit, but it progresses. The game works fine up until the title screen; when I am prompted to press Start, and do so, the game gives me a black, blank screen. Like I said, I have tried all possible mediums of playing this game, and have tried multiple sources.

I have also had trouble with Conker: Live and Reloaded. I have my Xbox hooked up to a component cable to an HDTV, and when I start this game, the TV keeps switching between 480p mode, and a "Signal not supported" error message. It never progresses past this point. I have tried it on the HDTV with composite cables, but I get the same message. The game worked fine on my SDTV using composite cables.

Third is a more generic error; in several games, I have had recurring disc reading errors in similar spots [Phantom Dust, Crimson Skies], despite the fact that I have tried different copies of these games each time. The Xbox just displays the standard "disc may be damaged or dirty" error. I have also tried downloading them and transferring them directly to the hard drive, with similar errors.

Does anyone have any idea what to do? It's obviously a problem with my Xbox in particular.

Try booting the games in different region modes, not the region setting on the console but actually force the region mode through XBMC (IIRC you press white to bring up the boot options)

Frequent "Disc may be damaged or dirty" warning is usually a sign that your laser is going bad or dirty. Try a CD-rom game ,like Shenmue II, or music cds, do you ever get problems with these types of discs? You could try cleaning the laser yourself with a cotton swap and Alcohol or use a CD laser lens cleaner. Make sure its the CD/DVD style not just DVD, if disc errors are occuring it most likely won't be able to read it.

You most likely have the Thompson drive which is the most prone to this problem, if you have to replace your xbox make sure its not a thompson dvd drive version.
Here's a link to tell what drive you have. Samsung is the best one.

Here's an informative site on cleaning or repairing the problem.

I had the same problem as you 'till it got so bad it can't even tell a disc was even in it. I tried the cleaning methods but mine was to far gone. I only paid $20 and found another for the same price. I would have adjusted the potentiometer but I am not too technicaly inclined and a multimeter would have cost me almost $20, my old ones not working.Good Luck!

The odd part is that I get these errors even if I load from the Hard Drive, with no discs at all. I have a v1.0 Xbox with a Thompson drive. Another game that I just bought and tried, Outrun 2006, has the EXACT same problem as Guilty Gear X2: It loads fine up until the start screen, where the background video shows noticeable lag, and after pressing start, gives a blank screen. However, in the case of Outrun, it is a white blank screen, not a black blank screen. I have a strong suspicion that these instances are related. Also, like before, I tried the game as a retail disc, a burnt disc, and a hard drive backup, all with the same results. One more thing; now, when I try to play Crimson Skies, it gives be another black, blank screen right after the "Microsoft Game Studios" video.

According to Microsoft the only other solution when you keep having problems like you discribed is to erase all memory of the games having trouble from your memory, back it up first if you must. But you never answered one of my questions are cd-rom type games playing fine and CDs? They are usually silver on the bottom but not always.

CDs can't be read by a Thompson drive, as I have heard. I have one, and CD-Rs are not recognized, and can't be loaded.
