I would say that VI is probably the best of the series, while VII is my favourite one. VI at least has by far the best bunch of characters.

I've only played I-V, VIII, X, and XII. So to rate those, I'd say from favorite to least it would be- X, IV, VIII, V, I, XII, III, II. II and III were pure pain, XII I got bored when the game essentially started playing itself. I know that X was far more linear than the rest, but I felt plotwise it was the strongest.
