Well, it looks like I won't be playing Fat Princess on the PS3 for a while now. But, this is for the best that I don't downgrade. Hackers will find a way around this. I sound like a broken record because I've said this so many times, but if there's one thing I have learned from my years of gaming, its that hackers always win. It may take a while, but there is no such thing as an unhackable console. We can do this if we all just stay strong! Do not give in to Sony; we're better than that!

[Also on a side note, I just noticed that MrPopo and Niode have almost the exact same post count!]

I think a class action lawsuit is the only way to win here. If Geohotz or whatever his name is puts up a custom firmware, can't sony detect that and "ban" you from PSN based off you mac address?

If they think you have modified your console they can surely ban your mac address. The detection is harder, and depends greatly on the methods used in the eventual hack. For example, I know on the PSP lots of people can get on the PSN with old custom hardware because it reports to the PSN that the PSP is running version X when it's really version Y.

Has anyone found a way around this update? I've tried multiple PS3 proxy programs, but none have worked.

During the Leap Year Bug "update" my Warfare 2 would not play online or offline because of the Trophy issue. Game would have run fine if I was not connected that day. So if I don't install this newest update, older games may eventually not run on or off line due to a possibly hidden Trophy patch.

I think you choose to keep OtherOS, which removes important functionality of playing recent games and online. What % of the original price this is worth fairly, I don't know. But considering the original fat price, it might be a good downpayment for a Slim, and that would let you have both functionalities (at the non-negligible "price" of having 2 bricks and needing to swap from one to the other etc., but oh well).

Ivo.
All academic, I doubt Sony would be willing. It would be great if they do get pressure to put back in all the features. My guess is Sony will do what it can to phase out the Fats. As Fats continue to YLOD, future repair or really what happens a replacement would be the Slim. It will eventually happen when Fat YLOD stock run out. Then there would be less clients that have older features available. No more Linux, PS2 or other Memory Card support and the consumer gets a lesser machine.

Here are some figures to contemplate though. My first 60gb YLOD which by the way failed during the last Firmware Update, cost 162 dollars from Sony Service Center for an even swap. The second YLOD luckily happened two weeks shy of warranty expiring. Since I already have two PS2s, I was ready to give up on 60gb in favor of possibly more reliable slim. Sony policy is even swap, to upgrade to a slim was another 142 dollars.
Would have been nice if that offer was available the first go around when I chucked out 162 dollars.

The figures:
Original Price - $599
New Slim PS3 - $299
Service Repair - $162
Slim Upgrade - $142
Keep Other OS - $0

As other possible loopholes are discovered for piracy, more features will be removed, rather then patch. Take a guess if Sony does bow to pressure to do the right thing. Blind consumers who will buy the newest Gen no matter what.

I spent $500 on mine. 80GB (80% compatible or whatever it is) and part of the reason i bought it early on, was the SACD, bluray, ps2, Ps3, psone, linux support, free online play. I can't wait till the free online play goes away. Sure, sony wont take it away... uhhh huh, ive heard that one before.

If you are running windows. Then follow this guide:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639964

The "http://fuk01.ps3.update.playstation.net ... telist.txt" will vary depending on your region. Follow the instructions exactly and it will work. I tested it on my Windows 7 x64 machine and it worked.

I did a slightly more elegant DNS_spoof and redirect with ettercap-ng on my Macbook Pro. Means I can just have my Macbook Pro running when I want to play on PSN rather than my PC.

I tried that, but I didn't want to downgrade my .NET installation to 1.1 from 4.0. I just ended up using the DNS trick; entering one manually, that is.
