First the fucking PS3 shit and now my Xbox 360 has conked out on me. I've been playing AC2 for the last couple of days on and off for a couple of hours at a time. When I've turned the system off it's not even been warm. I've turned it on today, and it's completely cold and i've got the RRoD. Done the sub-error check and It gave me 0020 which is classed as E08 on Xbox-scene:
xbox-Scene wrote:E08: Unconfirmed: General I/O Malfunction, could be caused by an error with any of the I/O devies such as A/V port, USB, Hard drive, DVD drive, etc. over torquing of the AV or heatsync bolts can cause this error.
Now for the kicker...
The xbox is much older than 3 years old... Do I have a leg to stand on as far as a free repair goes?
I dont think you can get a free repair. Mine RRoDed on me and they wouldnt fix it for free and mine was 3 years old. If it is the RRoD its kind of a simple fix. I fixed mine in about an hour for only 10 buck with a kit on ebay. havent had a problem since. And there is videos on youtube on how to fix it.
I doubt it. I think it's 1 year warranty for general crap, and 3 years for RRoD isn't it?
Of course, you can always try to argue your way to a free repair Probably won't get you anywhere though.
Just got off the phone with Microsoft Customer Support. Apparently my warranty expired on the 2nd March 2010... Which completely stumped me since it is a launch Xbox 360 Premium it's at least 4 years old... I guess the 3 year warranty lasted from the time that they instated for everyone or something. I'm just gutted that it's literally 28 days out of warranty, seriously, talk about bad luck.
They wanted £97 for the repair. Which I scoffed at, I said that simply won't pay that much since I'm:
A) Not getting a HDMI model in return
B) Getting the exact same model in return albeit a 65nm CPU
C) Still have to buy a new HDD 'cos I'm quickly running out of space on the tiny 20GB (16GB usuble due to filetable/operating system stuff) HDD.
So I'm better off buying an elite for £180, selling the official 120GB hard drive before the 250GB drives go on sale from amazon for £69.73 and selling the bundled games, making do with my 20GB drive until the 250GB is released and buying that. So in essence:
Xbox 360 Elite 120GB = £180 + £20 to get the free game plus discounted 2nd game)
Comes with; Forza Motorsport 3 (worth about £10 new)
Battlefield Bad Company 2 (worth about £27-30+ new)
120Gb HDD (worth about 40)
Total cost after sale of the crap it comes with, £119.73.
Buy the 250GB hard drive for £69.73 and use my 20GB drive in the meantime.
Total cost for Xbox 360 Elite with 250GB HDD = £189.46 (compared to cost of Super Elite at retail which is £239.99, the cheapest i've found)
I then 'fix' the original, sell it on ebay for about £80 with box and cables.
I then have an Xbox 360 Elite + 250GB drive + HDMI for £109.46 total cost. Certainly beats paying Microsoft £97 to only receive the same crappy non-HDMI console back.
Try these things.
1- Clean the contacts of the AV port, this can cause a problem.
2- Go grab another AV-cable, I have seen something like this happen before, many times it is just the cable and not the console.
3- Are the fans spinning and not plugged?
4- try removing the hard drive and booting up.

I had tried to fix a 360 with no video by replacing the x clamps and baking the 360 in it's own juices. The video would come and go as I fiddled with it over and over, but it only worked for 1 1/2 hours at most before croaking again.. My friend redid it a little further by only screwing to the board instead of to the metal shielding, then he flooded the graphic chip area with flux and used the fancy digital heat gun he just got to warm up the area and its been working for about 3 weeks now. I can find out the temperature he used if you want to give it a shot, or are you just going to go with your plan?
I'm gonna try and get it to work for a bit and then palm it off on a cash converters. Let them deal with it. Gonna probably do the towel trick to make it work long enough for them to check that it works and when I get the cash I'm out of there like a bandit.
