I recently picked up a Turbografx 16 with a bunch of games on Craigslist for really cheap. I was just wondering a few things...
Can the Japanese PC-engine duo play american cd games? as I know it can't play the HuCards.
What is the difference between the regular duo, the r, and the rx? anything aside from looks?
Since I already have a TG16 what is the cheapest method I could use to play all games from all regions?

As long as you have the right system card, the CD games are regionless. Some only require the version 2 system card, the Super CD games require the 3.0 card. The US Duo and Japanese R are mainly cosmetic differences. The RX is a bit more reliable and came with a 6 button pad instead of just a 2 button one. For playing other region games, the cheapest would be modding the TG yourself for switching between US and Japanese games. There are card adapters but they all go for ridiculous prices and you can only use them for Japanese games on US systems since US games have region lockout.
Since you already have a TG for US games, your best bet is probably to bite the bullet and get a PCE/CD or a Japanese Duo to play imports and CD games on.

Things might get pricey for you, starting from strictly the tg-16. You'll need the cd add on, plus the super system cards (2.0, 3.0, which upgrade the system to allow you to play the different cd games. CD vs. SuperCD) which can be hard to find and very expensive. For what you want, you'll need 3.0 specifically.
Turbo duos came standard with 3.0, so its easier, but buying a duo will cost you even more dearly than a super system card.
I'm unsure of the differences between the various versions of the duo, but I believe they are only cosmetic. Don't take my word for it though, I truly don't remember and I may very well be wrong about that.
I can confirm one piece of good news for you though, that being that, unlike the HUcards, all CD games are region free. So once you're all set up you'll be happily playing any damn import you please.
Hope this was of some help.
On another note, I hope you're enjoying the turbografx. I've been looking for one myself, but after learning about all the upgrades and such, decided to go with a Duo, which unfortunately are too expensive for me to consider right now, heh heh. Its definitely a "down the road" thing for me.

Heh, all good. Though you made me realize I was a little unclear. You only need to worry about the system cards if you get a CD attachment to go along with the TG or PCE. The Duo systems don't need system cards at all. Also, TG pads only fit the TG. Pads are all the same between the various Duo systems and the PCE.CFFJR wrote:Well I was a bit late on that, ha. Re: Pc-Engine duo? r? rx?
Thanks for the responses guys, I figured I'd need a pcduo or pce+cd. I think I am going to look into installing a region switch, and picking up a turbocd, but I think those are pretty pricey and break often :-/.
btw, I am thoroughly enjoying it, Blazing Lasers is the most fun I've had with a game in a while.

There's this...
http://www.tototek.com/store/index.php? ... ucts_id=30
It can be used on any region console, so I suspect it can play JPN games on a USA console. If you're interested, email Tomy at Tototek and ask. I've bought from them before, they're good. If I was gonna pick up a TurboDuo (which I've been debating over the last month) I would definitely pick up one of these flash cards. A lot of people would complain that it uses a parallel port to program it, but honestly, that's really not a big deal. It's also the flash cart and programmer in one which is pretty cool if you ask me.

That flashcart is pretty cool! So you need to have a pc plugged into it to play? I only have mac :[

found these too, I didn't realize there were so many flashcarts. definitely seems cost effective if I can get a hold of a working cd drive for cheap.

Re: Pc-Engine duo? r? rx?
I have the tototek pce flash cart. it works great. it won't play us games on a jp console unless it's region modded. the same goes for jp games on a us console. you only have to plug it into your computer when you are adding roms to it. i don't think the flasher software will work on mac though
